The Senior Lab Operations Manager role is crucial at Google DeepMind, acting as the central figure in the daily management and optimization of the lab ecosystem. This position involves overseeing every aspect of lab operations to maximize productivity and maintain a safe, efficient workspace for engineering and research activities. You will manage space allocation, equipment scheduling, and workflow coordination to ensure seamless operations where engineers and technicians are never hindered by logistical or operational obstacles. A primary focus of this role is to apply Lean and Six Sigma principles to transform a vibrant R&D environment into a disciplined, high-efficiency workspace while fostering a culture of safety-first and high performance. Additionally, this role requires adept coordination with internal engineering teams and external vendors to streamline processes, clear bottlenecks, and boost overall lab productivity.

With a salary range of $256,000 to $279,000 USD, coupled with a 20% bonus target and comprehensive equity benefits, this full-time position offers a competitive compensation package reflecting the seniority and impact of the role. As the metric-owner for lab floor productivity, you'll track and enhance key performance indicators like Lab Uptime, Station Utilization, and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR). Your role ensures that complex research and prototype development environments operate smoothly by maintaining consistent standards, applying rigorous 5S and Lean methodologies, and translating feedback into actionable strategies. By managing the pulse of the lab floor, you contribute directly to accelerating research velocity and supporting Google DeepMind's mission to push AI innovation safely and effectively. This position demands a strong background in Google Workspace products, a deep understanding of manufacturing or production management in physical environments, and the ability to communicate effectively across hardware and software disciplines.   • proficiency in reading and creating dashboards and defining metrics
  • ability to speak hardware and software to understand the difference between a firmware brick and a mechanical failure

Job Duties

  • own the daily rhythm of the lab with an eye on increasing research velocity
  • manage space allocation, equipment scheduling, and workflow optimization to ensure no engineer or technician is ever blocked
  • be the metric-owner for floor productivity tracking and optimizing key performance indicators such as lab uptime, station utilization, and mean time to repair
  • instill rigorous 5S and lean methodologies in the research and development lab environment
  • take feedback from operations to other teams to develop clear next steps
