The role of Senior Food Service Worker is essential within the Newark Board of Education's food service operations across various locations. This position is classified under the New Jersey Civil Service Commission, which means candidates will start as provisional employees and must pass a subsequent civil service examination to secure a permanent role. The Senior Food Service Worker works under the direction of a Cook, Head Cook, Food Service Supervisor, or other supervisory officials. This position involves assisting with food preparation and service, and in some cases, taking a leadership role among Food Service Workers and other individuals engaged in storing, preparing, and serving food. The Senior Food Service Worker plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen environment, ensuring that food is prepared and served according to prescribed guidelines, including compliance with special diets as set by a dietitian.

Key responsibilities include handling fruits, vegetables, meats, and bakery items, assisting with baking, and ensuring that all kitchen and food service areas are maintained in a sanitary and orderly condition. This job also involves utilizing manual and computerized recording systems to track inventory, temperature logs, and production records. The Senior Food Service Worker has the ability to lead and assign food delivery tasks and ensures efficient service. Applicants for this position must be ServSafe Certified and hold a valid Food Handlers Certificate. A high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience in general kitchen or food service work are required. Occasionally, the role may require a valid New Jersey driver’s license if operating a vehicle is essential for job duties.

This position is hourly, offering a salary of $18.78 per hour, with employment spanning a 10-month period. Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • acts as a general assistant in a kitchen, bakery, cannery, dining room, cafeteria, or other food preparation or service unit
  • serves special diets according to prescribed portions control guide set by dietitian
  • washes, scrubs, pares, hulls, cores, and prepares vegetables, fruits, and berries for cooking or for serving using manual or power driven equipment
  • may assume responsibility for certain phases of food preparation and cooking
  • assists in cutting of meat and baking
  • assists in keeping the kitchen or other areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition
  • assists or takes the lead in serving food from steam tables and other cooking utensils
  • delivers food to dining rooms and may assign employees in the delivery of this service
