The Senior Relay Technician position within ABM Electrical Power Services is a critical role that directly supports the safe and efficient operation of the electric grid. This role focuses on the calibration, installation, maintenance, and repair of protective relays and related equipment, ensuring the seamless functioning of substation and electric utility protection systems. Senior Relay Technicians work with microprocessor and electromechanical relays, station automation, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. They engage in rigorous testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and repair activities that guard the reliability of electrical networks.
This full-time position emphasizes both technical expertise and leadership skills. Senior Relay Technicians interpret complex project scopes and substation drawings such as single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and layout drawings. They write detailed procedural and test plans that support maintenance and construction efforts while adhering to stringent safety protocols. The role demands hands-on testing verification of voltage and current inputs, metering both locally and through SCADA, relay calibration, trip testing, and functional switch verification.
In addition to their technical responsibilities, Senior Relay Technicians provide mentorship and technical support to junior field personnel and often serve as subject matter experts in protective relaying. They may lead small project teams, ensuring efficient project completion without interruptions to service. This role requires adaptability, effective communication tailored to diverse audiences, and a commitment to workplace safety through comprehensive understanding of client switching protocols.

Job Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant field experience
- Familiarity with substation relay calibration and testing
- Strong understanding of power system protection and control schemes
- Ability to interpret and work from complex electrical diagrams
- Skilled in developing and executing test plans and procedures
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to communicate effectively in English
- Valid Driver’s license and good driving record
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in field conditions
- Commitment to safety protocols and client switching procedures
Job Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, testing and repairing substation relaying and control schemes
- Experience desirable in substation design (including protection & control engineering), substation construction, substation commissioning, SCADA/Fault Data/SER/Integration-Automation equipment installation and testing
- Knowledge of 3 phase power systems, power system protection & control schemes, test equipment, test equipment software
- Ability to interpret wiring and elementary diagrams
- Basic test skills to perform duties listed above
- Proficient PC skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Effective communication skills tailored for diverse groups
- Ability to learn and apply client’s switching procedures and safety measures
- Ability to perform regular field work indoors and outdoors
- Valid Driver’s license with good driving record
Job Duties
- Interprets project-level scope of work and effectively plans commissioning and resource scheduling and provides team leadership for completing test activities efficiently, on time and without service interruptions, adhering to all established safety protocol
- Interprets substation drawings (e.g., single line drawings, AC and DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings)
- Writing procedures and/or test plans in support of maintenance and construction activities including development of isolation plans and functional guidelines
- Testing, including (without limitation): reading/verifying all voltage and current inputs to relays
- verifying all metering (local and SCADA)
- calibrating all relays
- trip testing (local and SCADA)
- verifying all alarms (local and SCADA)
- verifying all function switches, etc.
- Leading and performing routine troubleshooting and repair of substation relaying and control equipment
- Commission new substations, power equipment, relaying (electro-mechanical, solid state and microprocessor), pilot channel equipment (power line carrier, pilot wire, transfer, transfer trip, fiber optic, CVT’s, line tuners, line traps, etc.), controls and communications equipment
- Providing project technical support to field service personnel
- Providing technical mentorship to junior level field service personnel
- Is considered a subject matter expert in the area of protective relaying in the field
- Serve as a technical lead for small project teams
