It is recognized globally for its academic and research excellence, its commitment to public service, and its diverse and inclusive community. UC Berkeley prides itself on fostering a culture that celebrates openness, freedom, and belonging for students, faculty, and staff alike. As a cornerstone of innovation and intellectual leadership, it continually drives advancements that create global intellectual, economic, and social impact. The university's commitment to equity, diversity, and social justice is deeply embedded in its mission and values, shaping an environment where education is viewed as a critical lever for social change and justice.

Within this dynamic and forward-thinking institution operates Berkeley Dining, a self-operated dining program under the Division of Student Affairs and Residential Student Services Programs portfolio. Berkeley Dining is dedicated to culinary excellence, social responsibility, and supporting the living and learning environment of its customers. Serving more than 12,000 meal plan holders, Berkeley Dining manages 14 dining facilities and provides over 5 million meals annually through a comprehensive range of services including all-you-care-to-eat residential dining, retail a la carte options, training tables, early childhood meal production, and catering services. Operating seven days a week and seventeen hours a day, Berkeley Dining employs approximately 450 full and part-time staff along with nearly 400 student workers, making it a vibrant and complex culinary operation on the Berkeley campus.

The Senior Custodian role at Berkeley Dining is crucial to ensuring the appearance, sanitation, and safety of dining operations across these multiple facilities. This position holds significant responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and order in food service areas, which directly influences the health and dining experience of the UC Berkeley community. The Senior Custodian’s duties encompass waste sorting and disposal, including garbage, compost, and recyclable materials, as well as cardboard box breakdown. They are responsible for cleaning trash and disposal collection areas, performing extensive floor maintenance such as sweeping, mopping, buffing, waxing, and vacuuming, and maintaining all dining service bathrooms. The role is hands-on, requiring the washing of pots, pans, utensils, and operating dish room equipment, ensuring the smooth functioning of kitchen operations.

Additionally, the Senior Custodian sets up tables and chairs in dining rooms, checks and restocks beverage machines and dispensers, and supports customer service by maintaining service and dining areas during meal periods. They are expected to engage positively with customers, address their needs proactively or escalate as necessary, and foster a respectful and accommodating dining atmosphere. Maintaining safety protocols and using cleaning chemicals safely are important aspects of this job. The position also involves power washing, equipment cleaning, supply maintenance, and assisting with problem-solving for cleaning and safety issues.

This full-time, partial-year career position offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $27.71 to $31.24 based on experience and qualifications and is eligible for a full benefits package. It is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid role at UC Berkeley, providing growth opportunities through professional development and employee resource groups.
