Job Requirements

  • Food Handlers Permit required
  • Two years food service or large quantity cooking experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to follow HACCP guidelines
  • Strong knowledge of food service equipment and sanitation principles
  • Physical ability to perform cooking and food preparation tasks
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Flexibility to assist other food and nutrition areas
  • Adherence to uniform and workplace standards

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Two years of food service or large quantity cooking experience in healthcare or hotel setting
  • Food Handlers Permit from Texas Department of State Health Services or American National Standards Institute required
  • ServSafe certification preferred
  • Proficiency in English speaking, reading, and writing
  • Strong knowledge of kitchen and food service equipment
  • Understanding of buffet receptions and upscale plated menus
  • Experience with fundamental cooking techniques such as braising and searing
  • Demonstrated ability to safely perform job duties through competency assessments
  • Effective communication skills with patients, physicians, and coworkers
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and adapt to changing work environments

Job Duties

  • Prepare and cook entrees, side dishes, and specialty products using hospital recipes
  • Prepare specialty dishes for catered events including physician dinners and employee recognition ceremonies
  • Maintain production to support patient, cafeteria, catering functions, and doctor’s lounge needs
  • Comply with Houston Methodist Food and Nutrition Services standards and local food ordinances
  • Maintain records including production logs and cooling charts per HACCP guidelines
  • Assist other food and nutrition service areas as needed
  • Inspect food for quality, freshness, and adherence to safety standards
  • Follow HACCP program for food storage, cooking, cooling, reheating, and labeling
  • Maintain sanitation of workspace and kitchen equipment
  • Contribute to food cost control by minimizing waste and proper resource use
  • Collaborate with food service coordinators to ensure timely meal preparation and delivery
  • Participate in daily production meetings focusing on patient satisfaction and service quality
  • Recommend new food items and contribute to menu development
  • Seek opportunities for self-development and update career development plans
