Job Description

The University of Rochester is a distinguished institution committed to fostering a dynamic and inclusive community guided by the principle of Meliora, which means Ever Better. This guiding philosophy reflects the university's dedication to excellence in education, research, clinical care, and community engagement. Situated in Rochester, New York, the university prides itself on a diverse environment embodying values of equity, leadership, integrity, openness, respect, and accountability. These core tenets shape the university’s culture, ensuring that all members of its community feel welcomed and supported to thrive personally and professionally. As a comprehensive research university, it offers a wide range of academic programs, innovative research opportunities, and extensive patient care services through its associated hospital and medical centers. The university is an employer known for its commitment to equity and inclusive practices, affirming non-discrimination policies across multiple protected characteristics and fostering a workplace where diversity is celebrated.

The role now available is a full-time, regular position within the University Facilities & Services (UF&S) RC Operations department. Employees in this position work a 40-hour week primarily during day shifts at the 26 Gibbs Street location in Rochester, NY. The compensation for this role ranges from $18.38 to $24.94 per hour, consistent with the collective bargaining agreement standards of the UR SEIU 023 H range. This is an essential service position focused on maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and organization of university buildings such as residence halls, hospitals, administrative offices, and academic venues.

The responsibilities involve both heavy and light custodial work using a variety of maintenance machines and cleaning equipment. Tasks include floor stripping and waxing, disinfecting surfaces, cleaning windows and upholstery, trash removal, and minor maintenance duties such as changing light bulbs and securing door hardware. The role demands stamina and physical capability, including frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting medium to heavy loads. Attention to detail and adherence to safety and cleanliness standards are critical to ensure the university's environments remain healthy and welcoming for staff, students, patients, and visitors.

This position is ideal for candidates who possess the ability to understand and execute verbal instructions effectively and who can work independently without supervision. The job exposes workers to various cleaning chemicals and potentially infectious materials, so adherence to safety protocols and personal protective equipment use is mandatory. Working within a large institution like the University of Rochester offers opportunities for growth, professional development, and contributing positively to a vibrant academic community.
