The role of the Security Officer at Houston Methodist is a critical position dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This position involves patrolling and monitoring hospital premises and personnel to prevent and respond to security issues effectively. The Security Officer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the protection of life and property by providing assistance with personal protection, traffic control, and emergency response services within the hospital. Utilizing Houston Methodist-approved defensive tactics, the officer ensures the safety of all individuals on the hospital premises while adhering to established protocols and standards.
This full-time position is non-exempt and requires a proactive individual who demonstrates strong customer service skills and the ability to function calmly in high-pressure situations. The Security Officer is also responsible for utilizing surveillance equipment, monitoring access points, responding to radio dispatches, and addressing any safety or security incidents promptly and professionally. The role demands proficiency in communication, both written and verbal, to effectively interact with hospital personnel, patients, visitors, and law enforcement when necessary.
Additionally, the Security Officer must be knowledgeable in public safety policies, HIPAA regulations, and emergency preparedness while maintaining compliance with all applicable safety standards. The position requires ongoing training and certification, including obtaining a Security Officer state license, a Texas driver’s license, and certifications such as the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI). Preferred qualifications include Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Job Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent education
- Criminal justice, security or related experience preferred
- Security Officer state license obtained within one year of employment
- Must obtain a Texas driver license within 90 days
- Completion of IAHSS certified security officer training within 90 days
- Completion of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor certification within 60 days
- Ability to communicate effectively in English
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and Webmail
- Ability to multi-task and function calmly in stressful situations
- Strong customer service skills
- Knowledge of HIPAA and patient confidentiality compliance
Job Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent education
- Criminal justice, security or related experience preferred
- Security Officer state license: Security Officer Non-Commissioned, submission of application within 14 days of hire date, and obtained within one year of employment or Security Officer Commissioned Level 3 or Personal Protection Officer Level 4 licensure
- DL - Driver License - Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, must obtain a Texas DL within 90 days
- IAHSS - Certified Security Officer-Basic, Advanced, Supervisor within 90 days
- NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor within 60 days
- Knowledge of public safety policies and procedures
- Understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality compliance
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and Webmail
- Demonstrated skills to perform safety and security functions
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in English
- Ability to multi-task and remain calm in stressful situations
Job Duties

- Secures premises and personnel by patrolling facilities

- Responds to all radio dispatches, answers calls and complaints and accurately assesses, responds timely, provides appropriate assistance and makes recommendations as needed for all emergent situations
- Accurately communicates and/or generates and completes reports by recording occurrences, information, observations, surveillance activities and conducting witness interviews
- Responds immediately to all emergency codes and takes appropriate action
- Maintains a safe environment, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous material, emergency preparedness and HIPAA
- Prevents loss and damage by reporting irregularities, informing violators of policy and procedures
- Utilizes and maintains HM and department equipment according to manufacturer specifications
- Implements actions that promote workplace safety culture and proactively prevents workplace violence
- Supports hospital and department goals and offers innovative solutions through participation in department projects
- Assumes responsibility for self-growth and development by participating in in-services programs and continuing education
