Job Description

The Cedar Rapids Community School District is a dynamic educational organization committed to providing quality education and services to its diverse student population. As an equal opportunity employer, the district values inclusivity, diversity, and professional growth, creating a positive working environment where employees are empowered to excel. The district offers a comprehensive range of services which includes a robust Food and Nutrition program dedicated to enhancing students' health and wellness through nutritious, safe, and appealing food options. With a focus on complying with nutritional standards and promoting healthy eating habits among students, the Food and Nutrition Department acts as an essential support system that contributes to the overall success of the school community.

The role available within this department is for a Food Service Supervisor who will play a pivotal leadership position in managing cafeteria operations at the school level. This position requires a committed individual responsible for supervising and participating in daily food preparation and service to ensure quality and safety standards are consistently met. The supervisor will oversee food security, storage, and handling protocols as well as enforce cleanliness, health regulations, and employee practices that comply with district and state guidelines. Key responsibilities include overseeing meal production and serving, assisting with the preparation of main entrees and baked goods, and ensuring that all cafeteria equipment remains safe, clean, and operational.

Additionally, the Food Service Supervisor will handle ordering of food supplies and branded products, manage daily work schedules, and lead a team of 15 to 17 cafeteria employees by providing guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluation. The person will also manage payroll and personnel records as necessary. Serving as the on-site expert and resource for nutrition-related inquiries, the supervisor collaborates with principals, faculty, parents, and students to support the nutritional needs of the school community, including accommodating students with special diet restrictions.

This position offers a schedule of 7.5 hours per day from 6:00 AM to 1:30 PM, primarily working during the nine-month school year. The hourly rate is $20.04, accompanied by district benefits aligned with the work agreement. The role demands physical activity such as standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and operating in a kitchen environment with varying noise levels and temperatures. The work also requires flexibility to support special events and after hours as necessary.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate positive leadership traits and the ability to maintain a constructive team environment. Effective communication skills, basic computer knowledge, detail orientation in processing reports and paperwork, problem-solving capabilities, and a strong understanding of school food service programs, nutritional standards, and sanitation are essential. The candidate must also exhibit professionalism, confidentiality, and a commitment to the health and safety of students and staff alike.

Overall, this role offers an opportunity to lead a vital aspect of the school district’s service to students through nutrition, positively impact community health, and contribute to a thriving educational environment through dedicated food service management.
