Job Description

University of Minnesota Extension is a major outreach arm of the University of Minnesota dedicated to serving the public through applied research and education. With a mission to make a positive difference in the lives of Minnesotans, Extension connects community needs with University resources to address critical issues throughout the state. The organization prides itself on attracting and retaining passionate, high-quality employees who integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into all programming and employee engagement activities. With a strong legacy of over 100 years in youth development, the Department of Youth Development manages Minnesota 4-H, a dynamic program that serves as both a community resource and a laboratory for continuous learning and program improvement. This commitment ensures the Extension continues to evolve and provide meaningful support to Minnesota's young people regardless of where they live or which youth programs they participate in.

The University of Minnesota Extension invites applicants to fill several Seasonal Youth Development Summer Food Service positions. These positions provide an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in food service and youth development to make an impact during 4-H events across Minnesota. The roles include High School Food Service Assistant, Food Service Worker, Food Service Manager, and Camp Food Service Manager. Each position plays a vital role in delivering high-quality meals and excellent service while upholding safety and health standards mandated by the Minnesota Department of Health.

These temporary and hourly roles are limited in duration and hours, tailored to accommodate the needs of specific county fairs, camps, and other 4-H events where the work environment may be in kitchens and dining areas that are not always climate-controlled. The work schedule varies and may include evenings, weekends, and extended hours during events. Compensation varies by role and experience, ranging from $15.25 per hour for entry-level assistants to up to $21 per hour for managerial positions.

The High School Food Service Assistant position is ideal for young individuals at least 16 years old and currently enrolled in high school. This role focuses on preparing and serving meals, maintaining cleanliness, and following established portion control practices to minimize waste. The Food Service Worker role requires a high school diploma and involves liaising with managers to coordinate meal counts, lead meal preparations, and maintain sanitary conditions. The Food Service Manager position requires added leadership capabilities, including managing budgets, overseeing supply chains, training staff and volunteers, and ensuring adherence to food safety regulations. Lastly, the Camp Food Service Manager role emphasizes planning and serving nutritious meals at 4-H camps, coordinating supplies, and maintaining inventory and compliance records.

Candidates must complete a screening questionnaire, pass background checks including motor vehicle record reviews, and undergo mandatory training such as Safety of Minors and Civil Rights. Physical requirements include the ability to lift 20 pounds, and stand or sit for long periods. The positions emphasize a safe, guest-focused experience and require commitment to the philosophy and guidelines of the University of Minnesota Extension and 4-H programs.

Overall, these roles offer meaningful seasonal employment opportunities that combine youth development, food service expertise, and community engagement. The University of Minnesota Extension values diversity and inclusion and is committed to providing equal access and opportunities for all applicants. Potential applicants must complete the online application and screening process to be considered and are encouraged to explore the unique benefits of joining an organization dedicated to lifelong learning and positive youth outcomes.
