Job Description

The City of Madison is seeking dedicated individuals for a seasonal position at the Madison Senior Center, located inside the Madison Community Center. This role is integral to maintaining and coordinating activities across various city-operated recreational facilities including gymnasiums, fields, courts, pools, playgrounds, and camp programs. As a part of the Recreation Department team, this position offers a unique opportunity for proactive individuals to contribute to the smooth operation of community-based sporting and recreational events. The pay range for this position is between $13.13 to $14.49 per hour, with the final wage determination based on experience and relevant qualifications.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a diverse array of tasks designed to ensure facilities are secure, safe, and welcoming for all patrons. This includes securing building doors and windows, managing lighting systems, and monitoring the conditions of recreational areas for any damages or safety hazards. The individual will observe activities to detect and investigate any unusual behavior such as trespassing and will supervise various courts, fields, and camp activities to maintain order and safety. The role calls for maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities which involves tasks like trash removal, sweeping, and mopping. Additionally, the position involves setting up equipment for various sports, camp activities, special events, or meetings.

The candidate will also serve as a positive role model for campers and patrons, fostering an environment of cooperation and respectful behavior. Communication and interaction with a broad range of individuals including campers, players, coaches, parents, guardians, co-workers, and administration are essential. Athletics responsibilities include preparation and maintenance of gym and field spaces such as lining fields and raking ball fields, assisting with registrations, and supervising athletic events and grounds.

This role requires flexibility as the work schedule often includes nights, weekends, holidays, and periods requiring extended hours with little advance notice. The job environment varies, including working indoors inside facilities and outdoors under varying weather conditions. Candidates must be able to maintain a strong driving record and drive as necessary for the position. The role also demands physical stamina and mobility to conduct inspections, set up equipment, perform cleaning duties, and handle light maintenance tasks. Physical capabilities include lifting up to 30 pounds, standing or sitting for extended periods, and operating various tools and equipment safely and effectively.

The Madison Recreation Department values dependability, performance, and a strong work ethic. Candidates with experience working with children or the general public and with some background in recreation or education are highly encouraged to apply.
