Job Description

The Central Park Zoo, a distinguished component of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), is renowned for its dedication to wildlife conservation, public education, and providing a unique natural experience in the midst of New York City. As an iconic destination, the zoo hosts a wide variety of events, enhancing its mission and connection with the community. The zoo is part of the Business Services, Events & Catering Department, which manages diverse and dynamic event functions to support both the facility's operational needs and its public engagement goals. This department is committed to maintaining high standards of service, safety, and operational excellence throughout all events.

The position of Event Assistant at Central Park Zoo is a seasonal, non-exempt role designed for individuals who thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy working behind the scenes to ensure flawless event execution. As part of the Events & Catering team, the Event Assistant works directly under the guidance of the Sales and Venue Operations Manager to facilitate smooth vendor operations and uphold the zoo's standards. This role not only requires a high degree of organizational skill and attention to detail but also a proactive attitude and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.

The Event Assistant is tasked with managing vendor load-ins and load-outs, overseeing vendor activities on-site, receiving deliveries efficiently, and ensuring compliance with all park rules to maintain an excellent guest experience and safety standards. The position demands flexible availability, including the ability to work mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends, with hours fluctuating in accordance with the event schedule between May and November.

This role is crucial for orchestrating events that reflect the WCS's core values, combining a professional and personable approach in interactions with clients and vendors. Effective communication across various departments is essential, as is the enforcement of safety regulations such as fire safety and security policies. Additional responsibilities include assisting with inventory management of on-site products, supporting inspections by Fire Marshall and Department of Buildings, and conducting site visits as required. The Event Assistant also provides direction and support to supplemental staff, ensuring comprehensive coverage throughout event operations.

Pay for this role ranges from $20 to $25 per hour, reflecting the skills and experience required to perform successfully. Candidates must be able to work independently or in a team setting with limited supervision and must be capable of physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds. A valid driver’s license is required, with specific licensing requirements applicable to New York residents or out-of-state applicants. Employment in this role may also involve working at other WCS facilities such as Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and the New York Aquarium when necessary.

The Wildlife Conservation Society is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion, actively seeking candidates who bring varied perspectives and experiences to the organizational culture. The role of Event Assistant provides a unique opportunity for individuals interested in event management, production, and conservation-oriented public engagement to contribute meaningfully in a dynamic and supportive environment.
