The Seaman II position at Massachusetts Maritime Academy plays a crucial role within the Marine Department, assisting with day-to-day operations, maintenance, and supervision related to marine assets. This full-time role requires proficiency in seamanship and marine vessel operations. Reporting to the Director of the Marine Department, the Seaman II supports the functionality and safety of vessels, piers, floats, and on-site marine equipment. The incumbents are responsible for providing practical seamanship instruction to cadets and department personnel, overseeing maintenance projects such as painting, welding, and cleaning, and managing inventory for the boat shop, including chemicals and tools. This hands-on position demands a working knowledge of maritime equipment and the ability to supervise and collaborate effectively with cadets and staff. The shift is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., subject to change based on administrative needs. The role comes with an annual salary of $52,230.10 and includes participation in a random drug testing program to ensure safety compliance as this is a safety-sensitive position. Job Requirements
- At least one year of experience as a seaman in the Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, governmental organization or similar marine seamanship experience
- Knowledge of seamanship terminology, equipment and devices for operating marine vessels
- Skilled in using seamanship hand tools and knot-tying
- Ability to perform physical maintenance tasks including painting, welding, lubricating machinery and cleaning
- Willingness to work Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or as assigned
- Must participate in random drug testing program as it pertains to safety sensitive position
Job Qualifications
- At least one year of experience as a seaman in the Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, governmental organization or similar marine seamanship experience
- Possess knowledge of seamanship terminology, equipment and devices for operating marine vessels
- Skilled in use of seamanship hand tools and knot-tying
- Current and valid Merchant Mariner Credential preferred
- STCW Basic Safety Training endorsement a plus
- Massachusetts Hydraulic Operators license preferred
- Class 2 or CDL Driver's License preferred
Job Duties
- Assist the Marine Director in general operations of the Marine Department assets
- Supervise cadets as required to support general operations of the Marine Department
- Provide boat shop supervision including equipment inventory, repair, general cleanliness and security
- Provide practical seamanship instruction to students and marine department personnel including line handling, splicing line and wire, use of anchor machinery, boat davits and rescue equipment
- Supervise and assist in vessel maintenance projects such as steel preservation, painting, welding, bilge and tank cleaning
- Operate and instruct proper use of davits, winches, windlasses and gangways
- Supervise and assist in maintenance of piers, floats and Marine Department buildings
- Provide supervision and inventory of paints, painting equipment, solvents and chemicals
- Perform scraping, chipping, painting and/or varnishing of boat surfaces
- Engage in maintenance activities such as lubricating marine machinery and equipment
- Participate in handling mooring lines for securing or releasing vessels
- Participate in raising and dropping of anchors, handling gangways, and performing related work as required
- Participate in random drug testing program as it pertains to safety sensitive position
- Perform other duties as assigned
