The open position is for a Seafood Team Leader, a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing all daily operations within the seafood department at Whole Foods Market. As the Seafood Team Leader, you will be entrusted with managing a variety of key operational elements including profitability, expense control, buying, merchandising, labor management, and regulatory compliance. Your role will include ensuring the department meets its sales and purchasing targets while maintaining strict adherence to food safety regulations and company policies. You will also lead team activities by hiring, developing, coaching, and when necessary, conducting corrective actions or separations with team members. Providing excellent customer service is a core component of this role. This involves not only leading by example but also holding assistant team leaders, supervisors, and team members accountable for delivering exceptional service at all times.

In this leadership capacity, you will collaborate closely with store leadership and other departments to maintain a productive and respectful working environment. This includes building and sustaining positive vendor relationships and staying informed about industry trends and competitors. Strategic responsibilities involve projecting sales and expenses to prepare operating budgets that support the department’s financial goals. You will foster a team atmosphere marked by mutual respect and motivation, encouraging team members to perform at their best while minimizing turnover. The position requires strong communication skills to ensure the seafood department team is aligned with Whole Foods Market’s vision, goals, and core values. Additionally, you must ensure that safety and security standards are maintained unit-wide and provide timely performance evaluations to support team member growth. Job Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand or walk 6-8 hours in an 8-hour workday
  • Capability to perform motions such as bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching
  • Experience handling knives and cutting equipment
  • Ability to work in wet, cold environments and temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Ability to use tools and equipment including box cutters and electric pallet jacks
  • Must work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 24 months retail experience
  • 12 months leadership experience

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum 24 months retail experience including 12 months team leadership experience
  • Food safety certification or commitment to complete within 6 months
  • Advanced knowledge of products, buying, pricing, merchandising, and inventory management
  • Excellent interpersonal, motivational, team building, and customer relationship skills
  • Ability to teach others constructively
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory and safety policies
  • Proficient mathematical skills for financial performance assessment
  • Demonstrated decision-making and prioritization skills
  • Proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, and operations-related applications

Job Duties

  • Hold assistant team leaders, supervisors, and team members accountable for delivering outstanding customer service
  • Make hiring and separation decisions in partnership with store leadership
  • Monitor and achieve sales, purchasing, and labor targets
  • Project annual sales and expenses and prepare operating budget
  • Manage ordering and inventory to achieve targeted contribution to profit margin
  • Establish and maintain collaborative and productive working relationships with departmental and store leadership
  • Establish and maintain positive and productive vendor relationships
  • Sustain exceptional knowledge of competitors and industry trends
  • Set and achieve highest standards of retail execution
  • Foster positive teamwork, mutual respect, and morale
  • Maintain awareness of customer flows and direct team members as needed
  • Select, train, develop, mentor, motivate, and counsel team members
  • Communicate and maintain team member safety and security standards
  • Provide timely and thoughtful performance evaluations
