Job Description
Exponent is the only premium engineering and scientific consulting firm with the depth and breadth of expertise to solve our clients' most profoundly unique, unprecedented, and urgent challenges. Founded over five decades ago, Exponent has built a strong reputation for connecting lessons from past failures with tomorrow's solutions. Our multidisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and regulatory experts collaborate to empower clients by creating safer, healthier, and more sustainable solutions. With more than 950 consultants, including over 640 Ph.D. holders and 30+ offices globally, we pride ourselves on a diverse pool of talents, backgrounds, ideas, and experiences. Our commitment to innovation and rigorous analysis has made us a trusted advisor across a wide array of industries.
At Exponent's Polymers and Chemistry Practice, based in our Seattle, WA office, we are seeking a Scientist/Associate to join our consulting staff. This role requires an advanced degree such as a Ph.D. or equivalent in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. The successful candidate will have extensive practical knowledge of the physical, chemical, and mechanical behavior of macromolecules. Expertise in analytical and experimental techniques such as microscopy, fractography, mechanical testing, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, DSC, TGA, and DMA is highly desirable. Experience with polymer and composite processing methods like extrusion, resin-transfer molding, and injection molding is advantageous, as is knowledge of process troubleshooting and polymer failure analysis.
This role emphasizes strong technical communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a desire to continually learn concepts beyond the candidate’s core expertise. Some travel will be involved, enabling collaboration with scientists and engineers from other Exponent offices and practices. The Scientist/Associate will lead technical teams and communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences ranging from engineering and business professionals to legal experts. Long-term success in this role involves developing business by securing new projects and attracting clients, further expanding Exponent's impact in the consulting field.
Responsibilities include performing inspections, scientific analyses, and material testing to evaluate material system performance and manufacturing processes. The candidate will follow established test protocols or create new ones where necessary to characterize materials effectively. Root-cause investigations of failing or underperforming materials and components involve examining their development, manufacturing, and end-use environments. Clear and effective communication of technical conclusions to stakeholders in engineering, business, law, and industry is critical.
Compensation for this position ranges from $124,800 to $161,200 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. This includes a base salary, bi-weekly bonuses for high-intensity efforts, annual bonuses, and a 7% employer contribution to a 401(k) plan. Exponent supports professional growth through mentoring, sponsorship, and a culture of continuous learning. We are an equal opportunity employer dedicated to fostering an inclusive work environment where all qualified applicants receive consideration regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.
