The Youth Development Professional position within the Programs department is a vital role that involves working directly with elementary, middle, and high school students within the San Bernardino Unified School District. This position offers the opportunity to make a positive and lasting impact on children’s lives by serving as a role model and mentor. The Youth Leaders maintain a staff-to-student ratio of approximately 1 to 20, aligned with CDC, State, and Federal Guidelines, to ensure safety and effective supervision. The role involves not only supervising students but also engaging them in meaningful and enriching activities that foster a sense of belonging, fun, and accomplishment according to the five key elements promoted by the Boys & Girls Clubs: A Safe, Positive Environment, A Sense of Belonging, Fun, Opportunities and Expectations, and Recognition.

Youth Development Professionals are responsible for motivating and encouraging program participation and providing homework and academic support, thus contributing to the educational development of the students. They create and maintain a safe environment by actively supervising the youth, setting clear behavioral expectations, and ensuring the cleanliness of program areas. This role requires excellent communication skills along with the ability to plan and implement quality activities that meet the developmental needs of children and adolescents.

The position is part-time with shifts typically scheduled after school for about four hours, Monday through Friday, and may include morning shifts. Those hired must be prepared to work in person at school sites within San Bernardino, CA. The organization emphasizes safety protocols to protect staff and students, including background checks, drug screening, and a physical exam as part of the hiring requirements. CPR and First Aid certifications are mandatory and can be obtained through certification courses offered within two months of hire.
