Job Description

Memphis-Shelby County Schools is a prominent and forward-thinking public school district committed to transforming education for over 110,000 students and families in the Memphis-Shelby County area. As one of the largest and most influential school districts in Tennessee, they continuously strive to position themselves as a national leader in educational excellence and innovation. The district is dedicated to bold visioning and ambitious goals that aim to elevate student outcomes and create equitable opportunities for all children. Their mission is grounded in the understanding that the current educational outcomes can be improved significantly, and with the right leadership, transformative progress is achievable for every student in the system.

This role is designed for individuals who demonstrate courageous thinking and proactive decision-making capabilities. Candidates are expected to be solution-oriented leaders who can synthesize complex information, adjust goals dynamically, and deliver measurable, positive outcomes despite challenges. Successful applicants will be leaders who can mobilize and empower teams, make data-informed decisions centered around people’s needs, and relentlessly remove barriers that hinder student achievement and well-being.

The position focuses on the efficient operation and leadership of school cafeterias across the district. Responsibilities include supervising food service staff, managing food planning and preparation, supervising point-of-sale terminal operations, handling financial reporting related to nutrition services, and ensuring compliance with all District, Board, State, and Federal policies and regulations. The role may extend to overseeing multiple satellite sites or cluster schools, including high-volume locations. The position is critical in supporting the nutritional needs of students, which directly impacts their ability to learn and perform academically.

Candidates entering as trainees must have a high school diploma or GED and at least two years of experience in institutional food service along with supervisory experience in food services. They must obtain ServSafe certification or complete the Tennessee Department of Education Food Safety and Schools Certificate Program within the first year of employment. Successful trainees who meet these certification requirements are then promoted to Supervisor, School Nutrition. The job offers supplemental pay for managing satellite sites, clusters, or special programs like Extended Learning Opportunities or Breakfast in the Classroom. This supplemental pay reflects the additional responsibilities and complexity involved in managing multiple or specialized service locations.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools embraces educational champions ready to be part of a transformative journey. This role not only demands operational excellence but also leadership that champions innovation, sustainability, and positive change in the lives of students and their families through the lens of nutrition and food services. The position offers a unique opportunity to be a part of a dynamic team dedicated to educational transformation, ensuring every child receives nutritious meals that support their learning potential in a safe and compliant environment. Overall, this is a critical role contributing to the wider goals of educational equity and student success across the district.
