Job Description
Memphis-Shelby County Schools is a prominent public school district dedicated to providing exceptional education to more than 110,000 students and families across the Memphis-Shelby County area. Committed to transforming educational outcomes and setting a national standard, the district actively seeks visionary leaders who are courageous thinkers, solutions-oriented, and high-performing game changers ready to lead meaningful change. At the core of Memphis-Shelby County Schools' mission lies a fierce dedication to improving opportunities and achieving ambitious results for its diverse student population.
The district is currently hiring for the position of Supervisor, School Nutrition, a critical role that ensures the efficient and effective operation of school cafeterias. This role involves comprehensive responsibilities such as supervising cafeteria staff, ordering foods and supplies, overseeing food planning, preparation, and service, managing point-of-sale terminal operations, and handling financial reporting. This position may also extend to providing food services across one or more satellite sites or operating cluster schools and high-volume locations.
The Supervisor, School Nutrition plays an essential part in guaranteeing compliance with all District and Board policies and relevant State and Federal regulations. The role demands a leader who is not only capable of managing daily operations but also someone who can adapt within a complex environment to innovate and maintain high standards. This leadership position requires a blend of practical experience in institutional food service, supervisory skills, and a strong commitment to food safety and quality standards.
Candidates typically begin as Trainees, requiring a high school diploma or GED, along with two years of experience in institutional food service and supervisory experience. Within one year, trainees must obtain ServSafe certification or complete the Tennessee Department of Education Food Safety and Schools Certificate Program, after which they can be promoted to the Supervisor role. The district values professional development and ensures that food safety and service excellence remain fundamental pillars of the role.
Compensation is structured with base pay plus supplemental amounts depending on the scope of responsibility, such as managing additional satellite or cluster sites. These supplementary pay scales reward the management of multiple locations or the oversight of special programs like Extended Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) and the Breakfast in the Classroom initiative. The diverse settings range from cluster schools that serve fewer than 250 meals to satellite schools—including charter, private, and parochial schools—and schools offering afterschool supper meals.
Overall, the Supervisor, School Nutrition position with Memphis-Shelby County Schools offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute directly to the wellness and nutritional health of students while playing an active role in the district's educational transformation efforts. It is geared toward individuals who are passionate about child nutrition, possess strong leadership capabilities, and are prepared to uphold the district's high standards for food service operations.
