Job Description
Memphis-Shelby County Schools is a prominent public school district serving over 110,000 students and their families throughout the Memphis-Shelby County area. Renowned for its commitment to excellence and educational transformation, the district is dedicated to fostering an environment where all students can achieve ambitious outcomes and thrive academically and personally. The district seeks to position itself as a national leader in education by embracing innovative approaches, courageous leadership, and a solutions-oriented mindset to tackle the complex challenges facing public education today.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools is currently looking for dynamic and results-driven leaders to join their school nutrition team, specifically in the role of School Nutrition Supervisor. This position plays a critical part in ensuring the effective operation of school cafeterias within the district. The School Nutrition Supervisor is responsible for overseeing food service operations including food planning, preparation, service, and maintaining compliance with applicable district policies as well as state and federal regulations. The role is pivotal in contributing to the health and well-being of students by managing the delivery of nutritious meals across one or more school sites, satellite schools, or clusters.
The employment type is full-time, and this position carries a responsibility that requires prior experience in institutional food service as well as supervisory experience within food services. Candidates will start as trainees with a minimum qualification of a High School diploma or GED coupled with at least two years of relevant experience. During the first year, trainees must obtain ServSafe certification or complete the Tennessee Department of Education Food Safety and Schools Certificate Program. Successful completion of these requirements and one year of service will promote the incumbent to a School Nutrition Supervisor role.
Salary and supplemental pay depend on the level of responsibility associated with the assignment, which may range from managing a single school cafeteria to overseeing a high-volume location with multiple satellite or cluster schools. Additional pay supplements are provided per satellite or cluster under supervision, with competitive base pay designed to reward experience and complexity of duties.
The School Nutrition Supervisor acts as a leader of leaders, ensuring that the cafeteria environment is both efficient and compliant. Responsibilities include managing staff, ordering and controlling food supplies, supervising the operation of point-of-sale terminals, and ensuring financial accountability through accurate reporting. The role demands strong organizational skills, an ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and a commitment to executing sustainable plans that improve food service operations and thus enhance students' access to nutritious meal options.
Effective supervisors embody the qualities of courageous thinkers and doers who are ready to confront challenges head-on with innovative solutions. They work collaboratively with various stakeholders, including school administration and district officials, to develop and implement operational strategies that align with the district's broader educational goals. By focusing on removing barriers to quality food service, the School Nutrition Supervisor contributes significantly to the educational experience by promoting healthy lifestyle choices among students.
This role not only supports daily operational excellence but also aligns with special programs such as Extended Learning Opportunities, Breakfast in the Classroom initiatives, and afterschool supper programs catered to at-risk students. Supervisors may thus find unique opportunities to expand their impact beyond traditional meal services, reinforcing the district's commitment to holistic student support.
Overall, the Memphis-Shelby County Schools offers a rewarding career prospect for individuals who are driven by purpose, leadership, and the desire to make a tangible difference in children’s lives through quality food service management. This role promises ample opportunities for professional growth, teamwork, and contribution to meaningful system-wide educational transformation.
