Job Description
The hiring organization is a school district Child Nutrition Services department committed to providing high-quality, nutritious meals to students across its educational institutions. This department plays a crucial role in supporting students' wellness and academic success by administering meal programs that adhere to strict nutritional standards and district requirements. The child nutrition team works collaboratively with school staff, students, and the community to promote healthy eating habits and ensure that every child has access to balanced meals during school hours. This department not only focuses on food preparation and service but also on creating positive dining experiences and encouraging participation in meal programs to support overall student health and development. The position available within this department is that of a School Kitchen Supervisor, a vital role responsible for the general operation and management of the school's kitchen facilities and food service activities. The employment type is typically full-time, with the role involving direct supervision of kitchen staff and active participation in meal preparation. This role offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic, service-oriented environment dedicated to child nutrition and education.
As the School Kitchen Supervisor, the individual will lead and oversee the preparation and serving of nutritious, cost-effective meals and ala carte items while ensuring compliance with child nutrition standards and district policies. This role demands strong leadership skills to manage and train kitchen staff, maintain inventory control by ordering and receiving food and supplies, and enforce sanitary and safety standards in the kitchen. Key responsibilities include monitoring food quality, inspecting deliveries, following strict temperature and storage guidelines based on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards, and maintaining accurate records and reports related to meal counts, cash handling, payroll, and special nutrition programs. The supervisor will also handle performance evaluations, conduct safety training, and foster cooperative relationships among staff and school personnel.
Working conditions require physical activity, including standing and walking for extended periods, lifting up to 25 pounds, and performing various manual tasks with agility and attention to detail. The position involves adapting to shifting priorities and interruptions and requires excellent communication skills for interaction with students, staff, and sometimes challenging situations. Candidates must demonstrate effective decision-making abilities, flexibility, and teamwork, along with a commitment to maintaining high standards in nutrition and food safety. Prior experience in cooking, baking, serving nutritious meals, and familiarity with record-keeping and reporting are essential. This position not only contributes to the effective operation of the school nutrition program but also supports a healthy, positive impact on student well-being and learning outcomes.
