Job Description
This position is offered by a school district's Culinary Services department, which is committed to providing nutritious, high-quality meals to students through efficient and sanitary kitchen operations. The district operates satellite kitchens which serve as important nodes for food service in schools, ensuring that children receive well-prepared meals that meet strict nutrition and safety standards. The role under general direction from the Culinary Services Director or designee requires responsibility for heating and serving meals in a satellite kitchen environment. The employee will prepare and serve attractive, nutritious, and cost-effective meals following menu planners. The position demands adherence to proper food handling techniques, safety and sanitation procedures, and involves scheduling and supervising both staff and student helpers. The employee will maintain accurate food service records, including meal and cash counts, inventory, payroll, and reports necessary for district compliance. This role also requires ordering meals from the central kitchen and adjusting orders to minimize waste. Regular kitchen and equipment cleaning, maintenance, and reporting of malfunctions are key duties to uphold safe and sanitary conditions. The position includes training and evaluating staff performance, promoting nutrition programs to increase meal participation, and responding to staff and student concerns effectively. Physical demands include standing and walking for long periods and lifting up to 25 pounds. Strong communication, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and flexibility to handle frequent interruptions are also required. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in food preparation or related field preferred
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
- Ability to carry, push, stoop, and reach
- Ability to handle repetitive tasks and perform fingering functions
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and adults including in difficult situations
- Willingness to follow safety and sanitation procedures
- Flexibility and adaptability to work under frequent interruptions and changing priorities
- Basic computer skills

- Knowledge of food preparation techniques and procedures
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation

- Knowledge of modern methods of food preparation including recipe adjustment and product standards

- Ability to do simple mathematical calculations

- Ability to learn federal, state and local requirements for the National School Lunch Programs
- Ability to operate all types of commercial kitchen equipment, including a mechanical aptitude for operating and adjusting complex equipment
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a variety of employees
- Ability to work under supervision
Job Duties
- Prepare and serve attractive, high quality, nutritious, cost effective meals following menu planners meeting district requirements
- Ensure that all student helpers and staff comply with proper food handling techniques and follow safety and sanitation procedures
- Develop, prepare and post work schedules and diagram of serving area for program continuity and to assure that tasks are complete within the time allocated
- Maintain accurate records and complete necessary reports including meal count, cash count, tickets, menu planners, orders, delivery, payroll, inventory and other reports needed according to district procedures either manually or by computer
- Maintain and schedule cleaning of kitchen and storeroom as well as kitchen equipment including tables and chairs
- Report equipment malfunctions to ensure safe working conditions
- Order appropriate number of meals from central kitchen and adjust meal count as needed to utilize all food ordered
- Maintain appropriate stock of food and supplies
- rotate and reorder as needed
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with others
- Assist school staff in promoting proper nutrition
- Respond to suggestions, complaints and requests of building staff and students
- Report all accidents promptly to Culinary Services office
- Train and supervise staff including conducting performance evaluations
- Train, monitor and evaluate student workers, substitutes and assigned staff
- Promote Culinary Services programs to increase meal participation
- Check and secure kitchen and dining area at the end of the shift
- Perform related duties as assigned
