Job Description

The hiring establishment is a Child Nutrition Services department operating within an educational district. This role is for a skilled Cook or Baker who will work under the direction of the Kitchen Manager or their designee. The position involves preparing and serving nutritious, attractive, and cost-effective meals by following standardized recipes and established schedules. The cook may also lead assistant staff during meal preparation, serving, and cleaning activities to maintain efficient cafeteria operations. Responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness and safety in the kitchen, managing food and supply inventories, handling money collection and meal recordkeeping, and promoting the Child Nutrition Services programs to enhance meal participation. The role calls for flexible teamwork, adaptability to changing priorities, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure with varying tasks amid frequent interruptions.

The position requires standing and walking for prolonged periods, lifting up to 25 pounds, and the ability to perform physical tasks such as carrying, pushing, stooping, reaching, and fine finger movements. There is occasional exposure to general cleaning chemicals, and physical ability including normal far vision, depth perception, and color vision is important. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience in commercial or institutional food preparation, be skilled in meal planning and recipe adjustment, and able to maintain accurate records. A background in assisting or serving in similar food service roles is preferred, as well as a strong understanding of food safety and sanitation practices. Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • prepare and serve attractive high quality nutritious cost effective meals following standardized procedures according to established work schedule following menu planners and district standards
  • complete tasks within time allocated
  • comply with approved safety and sanitation procedures
  • assist in cleaning of kitchen equipment tables and storeroom and report equipment malfunctions
  • assist in maintaining appropriate food and supply inventories
  • direct or assist unit employees in meal preparation tasks to meet emergencies or as needed
  • maintain required daily records and reports and submit to kitchen manager
  • collect money and account for meals served according to established procedures manually or by computer
  • maintain a plate count for record of meals served
  • promote child nutrition services programs to increase meal participation
  • assist school staff in promoting proper nutrition
  • establish and maintain cooperative working relations with others
  • perform related duties as assigned
