Job Description

The hiring establishment is a school district's Child Nutrition Services department, dedicated to providing high quality, nutritious, and cost-effective meals to students within the district. This department operates as part of the public school system and is committed to promoting healthy eating habits while supporting educational goals through proper nutrition. By adhering to strict safety, sanitation, and food preparation standards, the Child Nutrition Services team ensures that all meals comply with district guidelines and federal nutrition mandates. The department not only focuses on preparing delicious meals but also plays an essential role in educating students and staff about good nutrition to foster lifelong healthy habits.

This specific role is that of a skilled cook or baker who operates under the direction of the Kitchen Manager or their designee. The position involves performing specialized cooking and baking duties to maintain the high quality and nutritional value of meals served in school cafeterias. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and serving attractive food items that meet district nutrition and budgetary guidelines. They will also play a leadership role by assisting, directing, or overseeing other cafeteria staff during meal preparation, serving, and cleanup processes. The role is hands-on, requiring the capacity to follow standardized recipes and schedules precisely while maintaining compliance with approved safety and sanitation procedures.

In addition to meal preparation, the cook/baker will assist with maintaining the cleanliness of kitchen areas, including equipment and storage rooms, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment. They will help manage food and supply inventories, keeping necessary records and reports up to date and submitting these to the Kitchen Manager regularly. The role may extend to supporting money collection and meal count procedures, promoting Child Nutrition Services programs to boost participation, and collaborating with school staff to encourage healthy eating habits among students.

The working conditions for this position require stamina and physical capability, such as standing and walking for prolonged periods and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds. The role demands flexibility and adaptability due to frequent task interruptions and the necessity to shift priorities quickly. Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills are essential, especially when interacting with both students and adults, sometimes in challenging situations. The candidate should have normal vision capabilities, including depth perception and color vision, and be prepared for exposure to general cleaning chemicals used within the kitchen environment.

Overall, this role is critical to the smooth operation of school cafeterias within the district, ensuring nutritious and appealing meals are consistently served while contributing to the health and well-being of the student population. It offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic educational environment where teamwork, initiative, and commitment to child nutrition are valued and essential.
