Job Description

The Hawaii State Department of Education is seeking qualified applicants for the position of School Food Services Manager II, with a hiring range that also considers applicants for School Food Services Manager I to address any recruitment challenges. This position is offered as full-time employment with a monthly salary ranging from $5,732.27 for the School Food Services Manager I level to $6,105.07 for the School Food Services Manager II level. Candidates selected will play a critical role in the daily management, development, and sustainability of food service programs within schools, ensuring compliance with federal USDA meal pattern requirements and promoting healthy eating among students.

The School Food Services Manager is entrusted with planning and overseeing efficient food service operations in collaboration with school principals and the School Food Service Branch. Responsibilities include establishing high standards of quality control for food production and meal distribution, overseeing menu preparation, and adapting menus to accommodate students' dietary restrictions. This leadership role involves managing staff, including interviewing and selecting food service employees, training subordinates on proper work practices, sanitation, safety standards, and ensuring staff meet the annual training benchmarks as mandated by USDA regulations.

In addition to operational management, the role requires maintaining perpetual inventory and financial records, controlling expenditures, budgeting, and processing invoices. The manager must also conduct daily inspections of kitchen and dining areas to ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations, coordinate repair and maintenance of equipment, and may oversee satellite food service facilities involving preparation, scheduling, and logistics.

The position demands strong organizational, supervisory, and communication skills to lead and motivate a team while ensuring operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The School Food Services Manager will also attend staff meetings and workshops to stay current on training, certifications, and industry best practices. Job Duties

  • Determine and develop plans for efficient service, equipment, facilities, and operations in consultation with the principal and School Food Service Branch
  • Manage and direct daily food service operations and revise internal operating procedures
  • Establish and maintain high standards of quality control for food production and distribution
  • Supervise preparation of approved menus and recipes and serving of reimbursable meals under USDA requirements
  • Interview, select, train, plan, direct, schedule, and evaluate subordinate food service employees
  • Estimate and order food and supplies to meet menu needs and oversee receipt and storage
  • Maintain perpetual inventory, financial reports, and related records manually or via computer
  • Monitor and control expenditures, maintain assigned budget, and process invoices
  • Inspect kitchen, dining areas, and facilities daily to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Schedule and supervise equipment maintenance and repair
  • Coordinate satellite food serving operations including personnel scheduling and logistics
  • Attend staff meetings and workshops, maintain certifications, and archive training hours as required by USDA
