Founded in 1909, ABM operates on a large scale, serving over 20,000 clients with annualized revenues nearing 8 billion dollars. The company employs more than 100,000 team members across 350+ offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, and numerous other international locations. ABM offers a broad range of services, including janitorial services, engineering, parking, electrical and lighting solutions, energy and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, HVAC and mechanical services, landscape and turf maintenance, and mission-critical solutions. Their clientele spans various industries such as commercial office buildings, universities, airports, hospitals, data centers, manufacturing plants and distribution centers, entertainment venues, and more.
The Apprentice School Custodian position at ABM offers an excellent opportunity for individuals entering the workforce or returning with limited experience and education. This role involves performing general cleaning duties within designated areas of K-12 schools, colleges, or university campuses. The offered pay range is $17.75 per hour, and the specific offer may vary depending on the applicant’s experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, and market alignment. ABM is a military and veteran-friendly employer encouraging veterans and candidates with military experience to apply, recognizing and valuing the skills and discipline gained during military service.
This custodial role entails maintaining cleanliness and order in a variety of spaces, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, and stairways. Responsibilities include sweeping, removing debris, cleaning spills, mopping floors, emptying trash receptacles, and using chemical cleaners and equipment safely and effectively to prevent damage to floors and fixtures. Additionally, custodians are expected to report repair needs, establish communication with supervisors and co-workers, and participate in recycling efforts by consolidating and separating recyclable materials properly.
Custodians also perform dusting and cleaning of desks, furniture, doors, and fixtures, polishing hard surfaces such as woodwork and stainless steel, wiping tabletops and food service areas, moving furniture and equipment for thorough cleaning, maintaining interior glass and mirrors, managing seasonal outdoor tasks like raking leaves or snow removal, and ensuring restrooms meet cleanliness standards. ABM emphasizes compliance with all safety, security, quality, and regulatory standards, ensuring a safe and efficient work environment.
The position requires individuals to be at least 18 years old and offers on-the-job training, making it accessible to those without prior custodial experience, high school diplomas, GEDs, or college degrees. Preferred qualifications include prior customer service experience and at least one year of related work experience. ABM’s supportive work culture and comprehensive benefits package, provided through union membership, which includes medical, dental, vision, vacation, and 12 paid holidays, make this role a rewarding career starting point within a reputable global company. This opportunity reflects ABM’s commitment to diversity, equal opportunity, and accommodating applicants with disabilities. Hiring for this position aligns with the company’s values of service, quality, and inclusivity, providing candidates a chance to grow and advance while contributing to maintaining clean, safe educational environments.
