The role of the School Custodian at ABM is an essential position focused on maintaining cleanliness and order within educational environments such as K-12 schools, colleges, and university campuses. As a School Custodian, the successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of general cleaning duties in designated areas which include classrooms, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, and stairways. The position involves sweeping, mopping, removing debris, emptying trash receptacles, and using chemical cleaners and power equipment while following safety procedures to avoid damage. Additional tasks include reporting necessary repairs, maintaining recycling protocols, and supporting seasonal duties such as snow removal or lawn care.

Job Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • No experience required and on the job training provided
  • No high school diploma GED or college degree required
  • Ability to perform manual labor and physical tasks
  • Willingness to comply with safety regulations
  • Ability to work flexible hours if needed

Job Qualifications

  • Prior customer service experience preferred
  • One year of prior similar work experience preferred
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to follow safety and cleaning procedures
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to operate basic cleaning equipment
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safety standards

Job Duties

  • Clean and maintain assigned area such as classrooms hallways restrooms locker rooms offices and stairways
  • Sweep remove debris clean spills and mop floors in designated areas
  • Regularly check and empty trash receptacles in all designated areas
  • Follow procedures for use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage
  • Notify lead cleaner or manager of needed repairs or additions to building systems
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with clients coworkers shift coordinators supervisors and managers
  • Collect consolidate and separate recycling into proper receptacles
  • Clean and dust desks chairs tables furniture fixtures doors sills floors ceilings and walls
  • Polish hard surfaces such as woodwork and stainless steel surfaces
  • Wipe and clean tabletops chairs and equipment in food areas
  • Move cabinets boxes furniture crates and equipment manually or using hand trucks
  • Clean interior partition glass windows glass partitions and mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners sponges and squeegees
  • Sweep walks rake leaves cut grass remove snow or perform other incidental seasonal tasks
  • Maintain cleanliness of restrooms including cleaning and polishing
  • Comply with all safety security compliance and quality standards and procedures established by the company clients and regulatory authorities
