Job Description
The Hawaii State Department of Education is a public education system responsible for delivering quality education across all public schools in the state. It is dedicated to fostering a supportive learning environment through excellent teaching, inclusive programs, and comprehensive services aimed at ensuring every student’s success. As one of the largest employers in the state, the department emphasizes equal opportunity and diversity in its workforce, adhering strictly to anti-discrimination laws covering race, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, and other protected categories. The Department offers various employment opportunities, including permanent and temporary positions, with competitive salaries and benefits aligned with state standards. It maintains transparency in its hiring practices and invests in ongoing training and development programs for employees to enhance their skills and advance their careers within the education sector.
The role of a School Cook II, or in some cases School Cook I in recruitment challenges, is crucial within the Hawaii State Department of Education's food service program. School cooks serve an essential function in ensuring that nutritious, safe, and appealing meals are prepared and served efficiently to meet the demands of students and staff during meal service times. These positions are full-time and come with salary ranges of $4,849 per month for School Cook I (BC-04) and $5,246 per month for School Cook II (BC-06), which include shortage and school year differentials if applicable.
The School Cook II position involves advanced responsibility compared to School Cook I, including planning, coordination, food production review, and supervision duties. These cooks work closely with other food service staff members to organize meal preparation schedules, estimate ingredient needs, and ensure the proper use of standardized recipes. Attention to detail is required, as cooks must accurately weigh ingredients, adjust recipe yields to meet production needs, and prepare a variety of foods such as sandwiches, breakfast meals, and more. This role also requires skill in safely storing and disposing of food, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in all work areas, and managing inventory control including receiving and documenting supplies. Additionally, the School Cook II may have supervisory responsibilities such as directing cafeteria helpers and training new employees, where applicable.
The position demands a thorough knowledge of quantity cooking, acquired through hands-on experience in settings like schools, hospitals, hotels, or restaurants. This experience ensures competence in cooking large quantities of food efficiently and maintaining high standards of quality and safety. Candidates should meet minimum qualifications, including a high school diploma or equivalent, along with relevant practical experience or acceptable educational substitutions such as an associate degree in Food Service or Culinary Arts from an accredited institution. The role also requires the completion of USDA-mandated training hours and participation in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
The Hawaii State Department of Education encourages applications from qualified individuals who are committed to contributing to the well-being of the school community through their culinary skills and dedication to food service excellence. This opportunity offers a stable career with room for growth and the chance to impact students' daily lives positively by providing nourishing meals essential for learning and development.
