Job Description

The salary range for School Cook I starts at $4,849.00 per month, while School Cook II is offered $5,246.00 per month. The role is full-time, with benefits and salary based on a standard 40-hour workweek and includes differentials for shortage and school year as applicable.

As a School Cook II, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and preparing meals in a school environment under the guidance of the School Food Services Manager. This role demands proficiency in quantity cooking, following standardized recipes, food safety and sanitation practices, and effective team coordination with other food service employees to ensure timely meal service. The duties also include monitoring food production records, adjusting recipes and cooking times as needed, and ensuring compliance with dietary requirements, including meals for students with special needs. This position also involves managing inventory, labeling and storing leftovers appropriately, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of work and serving areas, and supervising cafeteria helpers and staff involved in food service operations. Participation in staff meetings, workshops, and USDA-mandated training is required to maintain skill currency.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum education of high school graduation or equivalent and possess relevant hands-on experience in quantity cooking gained in environments such as schools, hospitals, hotels, or institutions. Specialized experience should demonstrate knowledge of ingredient properties, standardized recipe preparation, safe food handling, and sanitation practices, alongside the capability to estimate preparation and cooking times to meet scheduled meal service times. Experience limited to simple cooking tasks like fry-cooking or only serving and cleaning is not considered qualifying for this role. Applicants with an associate's degree in Food Service or related culinary arts program can substitute education for experience on a month-for-month basis. Job Requirements

  • At least six months of general experience in food preparation and cooking for School Cook I
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for recipe adjustments

  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards
  • Good physical stamina to perform cooking and cleaning tasks

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Experience that demonstrates knowledge of preparing and cooking food
  • Specialized experience in quantity cooking work in a restaurant, hotel, hospital, school or institution which included actual hands-on experience in the various phases of quantity food preparation
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes, adjust recipes when decreasing or increasing yield, estimate sufficient ingredients/raw foods to meet menu requirements, and estimate preparation cooking times to meet scheduled meal service times
  • Knowledge of food kitchen safety and sanitation practices
  • Ability to coordinate with others and supervise helpers
  • Completion of training or education in food service/culinary arts program may be substituted for experience on a month-for-month basis.

Job Duties

  • Plans, coordinates and works closely with other food service employees to ensure meals are prepared in a timely manner to meet meal service times and/or satellite delivery schedules
  • Reviews daily/weekly/monthly food production records and makes cooking/preparation plans accordingly, estimates preparation and cooking time, determines appropriate standardized recipe, and secures necessary ingredients and equipment for preparation and cooking purposes
  • Accurately weighs and measures ingredients in accordance with approved standardized recipes and daily production needs
  • Prepares, cooks, and heats a variety of foods including sandwiches, breakfast meals, taco shells, French fries, etc.
  • slices food and assembles salads and sandwiches
  • cooks simple starches and seasons vegetables
  • assists in the preparation and cooking of the principal lunch meal, breakfast, and other supplementary meal items
  • may prepare meal items for students with special dietary needs
  • Sets-up serving counters for meal service, serves students and staff, and replenishes food and other supplementary items as needed
  • Portions and/or directs the portioning/packing of menu items for satellite meals
  • Cleans and maintains work areas, serving counters, and dining areas in a neat, sanitary, and orderly manner
  • properly labels, stores, and/or disposes leftover foods
  • Receives provisions ordered, documents product temperatures if applicable, and reports discrepancies to School Food Services Manager
  • directs/instructs cafeteria helpers and/or other adult/student helpers assigned to assist with food preparation, serving, and/or cleanup
  • attends and participates in staff meetings, workshops, and in-service training
  • achieves the annual minimum required training hours as outlined by the USDA.
