Job Description

The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) is a public education system committed to fostering academic excellence, innovation, and equitable learning opportunities across the state. As the largest educational organization in Hawaii, HIDOE is dedicated to creating safe and supportive environments that promote the well-being and success of students and staff alike. It operates numerous schools and educational programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of Hawaii’s communities, emphasizing cultural inclusivity and sustainable practices.

This particular opportunity is for the position of School Baker (BC-06) within the HIDOE’s school food services program. The role is designed for individuals passionate about baking and culinary arts who want to contribute to the nutritional programs that support student health and learning. Offering a monthly salary of $5,054.00 based on full-time employment, this role involves preparing large quantities of baked goods such as bread, rolls, muffins, pizza crusts, and more for school meal services. The School Baker works closely with other food service employees to ensure that baked products are prepared and delivered on schedule, maintaining both quality and hygiene standards.

The position requires someone with deep knowledge and skills in quantity baking – an understanding of ingredients, recipe standardization, and production scaling is essential. The School Baker will be responsible for reviewing production records, measuring and mixing ingredients accurately, baking a variety of items, setting up serving areas, and managing leftovers and inventory. This role also includes supervisory duties, such as directing cafeteria helpers and training new food service employees. Compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations is critical, as it ensures meals served to students are safe and of high quality.

In addition to practical baking and culinary skills, the role demands organizational capability and attention to detail to manage multiple responsibilities including record-keeping, receiving deliveries, and maintaining a clean work environment. Participation in staff meetings, workshops, and ongoing training mandated by the United States Department of Agriculture is part of the job to stay current with food service standards and practices.

This position is particularly suitable for individuals with prior experience in baking or culinary environments such as restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, or other institutions where quantity baking is performed. The ideal candidate should have at least one year of specialized baking experience with the ability to handle the full spectrum of baking operations from ingredient handling to final product preparation and service. Educational qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, with allowances for substitutions such as an associate’s degree in culinary arts or food service that includes quantity baking, or equivalent formal training.

Working as a School Baker for the Hawaii State Department of Education offers more than just a job; it provides an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the health and well-being of Hawaii's youth, working in a collaborative and supportive professional environment. This role encourages continuous learning and professional development to enhance skills and effectiveness in food service operations.

The employment is typically subject to the terms and conditions of temporary assignments which may be extended based on funding and departmental needs. Successful candidates should be prepared to comply with strict safety, hygiene, and procedural standards and demonstrate the ability to perform their duties efficiently and with a high degree of responsibility. The HIDOE is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion across all organizational levels, ensuring fair treatment and equal access to employment opportunities.
