The role of Culinary Lead at H-E-B Restaurants is a pivotal position that blends culinary expertise with leadership and operational management in a fast-paced retail food environment. You will lead the kitchen team by providing training, development, and direction to Partners, supporting them to excel in their roles. The position also requires you to step into supervisory roles in the absence of the Manager, including overseeing daily operations, performing closing duties, and supporting inventory and purchasing functions. Culinary Leads are responsible for ensuring the freshness, quality, and presentation of food items, handling customer interactions to build strong relationships, and managing any complaints in a professional manner.

Additionally, a Culinary Lead must function efficiently in multiple cooking venues and assist with catering orders while maintaining a sense of urgency and accuracy in all tasks. Mastery in culinary knowledge, food processing skills, nutritional understanding, and culinary math are essential to excel in this role. The ability to supervise, cross-train kitchen staff, troubleshoot equipment issues, and use company systems for safety, inventory, and purchasing is critical.

Job Duties

  • Builds strong relationships with customers in varying situations
  • provides work direction, training
  • directly supervises Partners
  • trains Partners on recipe execution, food safety, compliance, sanitation, equipment operation
  • serves as conduit of communication for management
  • works with Manager at peak times
  • performs closing duties as needed
  • may serve as backup to management
  • assists in inventory control and purchasing duties
  • assists in technical areas, and with catering orders, as needed
  • ensures back of house team assists with catering orders, when needed
  • provides internal customer service
  • models a sense of urgency related to accuracy, speed, and food freshness
  • addresses complaints
  • resolves problems in a way that builds relationships
  • performs back of house duties frequently
  • may assist in multiple cooking venues
  • performs front of house duties including order-taking, payment, and customer service proficiently
  • performs other duties as assigned
