The role of Sales Consultant Associate at Unum is tailored for individuals eager to grow into marketing and technical experts within the group and voluntary employee benefits arena. This role focuses on educating and motivating insurance brokers, agents, and consultants to effectively sell Unum’s products, specifically targeting the small case market. Sales Consultant Associates are equipped with extensive developmental experiences including mentorship, cohort-based training, and technical product education, all designed to build robust skills and establish strong client and broker relationships. Initially supported by a base pay during the training period, the position evolves into a commission-driven role with uncapped income potential based on new business growth.

Sales Consultant Associates play a critical role in acquiring and retaining new customers by gaining a deep understanding of Unum’s product offerings and how to position these effectively with brokers and clients. Duties extend to supporting the enrollment process, negotiating pricing and understanding underwriting processes, and preparing block reviews for key brokers. The position demands continual learning, including obtaining applicable insurance licenses within assigned territories during the development phase. It requires a highly motivated, goal-oriented professional possessing excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a strong capability to influence and persuade, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. The role also involves teamwork to optimize sales results and may require limited travel.

Job Duties

  • Effectively learn and understand the Unum business environment to support the acquisition and retention of new customers
  • Acquire a broad knowledge of Unum’s group and voluntary product portfolio and service offerings and how to position sales solutions to brokers and clients
  • Develop and build relationships with brokers in an assigned territory and/or for an assigned product
  • Assist in the enrollment process for new and existing customers
  • Build a pipeline of opportunities to sell and support the acquisition and retention of new customers in the small case market
  • Work with Quote Unum and Underwriting to effectively understand negotiation and business pricing in the small case market
  • Build strong broker/distribution partnerships
