Job Description

The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) is a well-established nonprofit organization that has been serving as a critical partner to the National Park Service since 1981. The Parks Conservancy works in close collaboration with the Presidio Trust, community partners, donors, and the public to support the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), an expansive collection of parklands that spans three Bay Area counties, including renowned sites on both the north and south sides of the Golden Gate Bridge. These sites encompass world-famous landmarks and natural preserves such as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands End, and the Presidio of San Francisco.

The Parks Conservancy operates at the intersection of cultural enrichment, environmental sustainability, community engagement, social justice, and climate resilience. Its mission is to foster deep connections between people and parks through education, volunteerism, and long-term stewardship. This dedication is fueled by a passionate team of park builders, caretakers, ambassadors, and educators, all united under the vision of ensuring parks remain accessible and protected for future generations – "Parks for All Forever." Their work actively promotes public awareness and accessibility of the parks, enhancing both visitor experiences and conservation efforts.

Within this dynamic environment, the Interpretive Centers and Sales Department plays an essential role by managing the day-to-day operations of visitor centers across the Golden Gate National Parks. These centers provide not only valuable educational and interpretive materials but also a curated selection of proprietary and park-related merchandise and offerings. The department’s scope includes managing multiple park stores such as the Alcatraz Park Stores, Muir Woods Visitor Center, Lands End Lookout, Warming Hut, Fort Point Park Store, Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center, and the Presidio Visitor Center. Besides retail operations, the department develops park maps, books, branded products, online sales, wholesale programs, and oversees the fee collection operations at Muir Woods.

The Sales Associate II position, located at the Presidio Visitor Center and Fort Point, is a pivotal role within this cooperating team. This is a non-exempt, full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, offering a pay rate of $24.50 per hour along with an attractive benefits package including health, dental and vision insurance, paid time off, a 403(b) retirement plan, employee assistance programs, commuter benefits, and staff discounts.

The Sales Associate II differs from the Sales Associate I role by having additional responsibilities such as overseeing lower-level sales associates (SAI) and managing more complex store operations. The successful candidate will help support sales managers in maintaining high levels of customer service, handling sales and inventories, ensuring proper cash management, and overseeing store presentation standards. Key duties include opening and closing the store, cash and safe reconciliation, assisting with inventory counts, merchandising, and supervising fellow associates. The Sales Associate II is also expected to be well-informed about the parks, local transportation, and visitor services to provide enriching and accurate information to park visitors.

This role demands a flexible schedule inclusive of weekends and holidays with variations depending on location and seasonality. The ideal candidate will thrive in a busy retail environment, exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, be adept at operating point-of-sale systems, and manage multiple tasks effectively while working both independently and as part of a collaborative team. By representing the Parks Conservancy at these important visitor hubs, the Sales Associate II significantly contributes to the mission of connecting people with the priceless natural and cultural heritage preserved within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
