Job Description
Safety-Kleen in San Diego, CA, is a leading provider of environmental, energy, and industrial services and is currently seeking a Sales and Service Route Driver Trainee (Driver Class B Trainee). Safety-Kleen is a subsidiary of Clean Harbors, a well-established company recognized across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico for its commitment to solving tough environmental problems through innovation and proven methodologies. By joining Safety-Kleen, candidates become part of a company dedicated to maintaining sustainability and advancing environmental safety. The company prides itself on prioritizing health and safety, placing it as their number one value every single day of the year. This mindset is reflected in all aspects of their work environment and corporate culture.
This trainee role is designed to train individuals to drive Class B box trucks and provide onsite services, including servicing parts washer machines, picking up containerized hazardous waste, and selling products and services across a defined route. The position involves a dynamic mixture of driving, customer service, general labor, and sales responsibilities, making it ideal for individuals who value variety and want to grow in a company that offers opportunities for career advancement. The role will require trainees to attend a one-week out-of-state academy to develop the necessary skills to perform safely and efficiently.
Employees in this role will benefit from competitive compensation starting at $27.25 per hour, plus a $5,000 sign-on bonus if they hold a Class B CDL. Working hours typically consist of 10-12 hour days, offering uncapped commission opportunities that reward dedication and performance. Health and wellness are supported immediately with comprehensive health benefits provided after just 30 days of full-time employment, including access to a 401(k) plan with company matching to help secure employees’ financial futures. Staff members can also participate in the Employee Stock Purchase Plan, providing an additional opportunity to share in the company’s success.
The Sales and Service Route Driver Trainee will be responsible for visiting 10 to 12 customer sites daily, servicing parts washer machines and performing routine maintenance tasks such as switching out 15- and 30-gallon drums of solutions and cleaning sediment from sinks. They will handle servicing a diverse range of clients including automotive repair shops, fleet operators, and manufacturing businesses. The role emphasizes safe vehicle operation in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) standards. Trainees will also be expected to uphold all company environmental health and safety guidelines, ensuring that the work environment remains safe for themselves, their colleagues, and the communities they serve.
As an environmentally focused service provider, Safety-Kleen and Clean Harbors are committed to sustainability, aiming to minimize environmental impact through all aspects of their operational procedures. Employees are encouraged to take part in this mission, contributing to a cleaner and safer planet. With company-paid training and tuition reimbursement, the role supports continuous learning and development, helping employees build long-term careers. Preferred candidates will have strong communication and customer service skills, combined with a readiness to perform physical job functions consistently. The company also supports diversity and inclusion, offering equal employment opportunities without discrimination, as well as accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
