This full-time onsite Safety Specialist position is based in Los Angeles, CA, focused on the LAX Automated People Mover (APM) system. The role involves applying environmental, health, and safety expertise to a high-profile automated transportation project. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with operations, maintenance teams, and contractor personnel to ensure compliance with safety regulations and operational safety excellence. Responsibilities include the leadership and oversight of safety plans, risk assessments, hazard identification, incident investigations, and regulatory coordination.

The Safety Specialist will play a vital role in managing safety programs such as the CPUC Public Transit Agency Safety Plan (P-TASP) and the Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) program. This includes developing, implementing, and monitoring safety procedures, conducting field audits, providing safety training, and driving continuous improvement through performance data analysis. The position offers a competitive salary range of $115,000 to $125,000 and a dynamic work environment that supports professional growth and development in the rail transit industry.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience in rail transit or regulated environments
  • Familiarity with Roadway Worker Protection programs
  • Knowledge of CPUC regulations and OSHA standards
  • Ability to develop and enforce SOPs
  • Certified Safety Professional certification preferred
  • Strong communication skills
  • Leadership and analytical abilities

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, Transportation, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience or understanding of rail transit, Automated People Mover systems, or similar regulated environments
  • Familiarity with developing and implementing Roadway Worker Protection programs
  • Knowledge of CPUC regulations, OSHA standards, and Safety Management Systems
  • Ability to develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures in compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements
  • Certified Safety Professional or strong communication and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for risk assessments and safety analyses
  • Experience with incident investigations and corrective actions implementation
  • Proficiency in coordinating with regulatory agencies and supporting audits or inspections
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness and response program development

Job Duties

  • Lead development, implementation, and oversight of CPUC Public Transit Agency Safety Plan requirements for LAX APM operations
  • Develop, implement, and enforce Roadway Worker Protection program including procedures, training, compliance monitoring, and field audits
  • Create, implement, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures aligned with regulatory, contractual, and operational safety requirements
  • Provide field safety oversight of operations, maintenance, and contractor activities to ensure safe execution of work
  • Lead and support incident, accident, and near-miss investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented
  • Conduct hazard identification, risk assessments, and safety analyses to proactively identify and mitigate risks
  • Monitor compliance with CPUC, OSHA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies including CPUC and support audits, inspections, and reporting requirements
  • Analyze safety performance data, trends, and KPIs to drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provide safety training, coaching, and awareness programs to employees and contractors
