The role of Safety Professional at Peoples Gas is a critical position within the company’s safety organization. This role supports the safety leadership responsible for over 750 team members and manages the safety aspects of a vast natural gas system spanning 14,000 miles of pipeline with a fleet that covers 8 million miles annually. The Safety Professional plays an integral role in developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety programs and procedures tailored for the natural gas utility industry. This includes managing occupational safety, environmental compliance, health, and accident prevention efforts, thereby safeguarding the wellbeing of employees, contractors, and the communities served by Peoples Gas. The Safety Professional will have a hands-on role in field engagement, emergency response to natural disasters such as hurricanes, accident investigations, safety training initiatives, and continual improvement of the Safety Management System (SMS).

This position requires a proficient understanding of industry standards, federal, state, and local safety regulations, as well as a proven track record of leadership in a safety capacity. The candidate is expected to conduct thorough safety audits, develop tailored safety programs, and lead safety committees while collaborating closely with operational teams and regulators. The role also involves fleet safety management and upholding compliance with the Department of Transportation requirements for commercial vehicles. Candidates will need strong communication and organizational skills to effectively convey safety information, handle accident investigations, and support regulatory compliance initiatives. Additionally, the Safety Professional will be required to travel across multiple service areas in Florida and participate in an on-call rotation for emergency response. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or master’s degree in a related field or high school diploma with extensive relevant experience
  • minimum 8 years related gas utility operations or professional safety experience

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least 5 years’ experience as a safety professional or master’s degree in a related field with at least 4 years’ experience as a safety professional or high school diploma with at least 10 years relevant experience with increasing level of responsibility
  • minimum of 8 years related gas utility operations or related industry operations experience or professional safety experience, a college degree may be considered in lieu of equivalent experience
  • thorough understanding of the safe work practices and programs related to the utility industry to provide technical support to business units
  • familiar with federal, state and local safety regulations
  • autonomous work schedule to maximize field engagement and impact
  • demonstrated strong leadership, interpersonal skills, and proven experience in a participatory diverse workforce environment
  • ability to research, develop, and coordinate comprehensive safety and health accident prevention programs

Job Duties

  • Develop company safety programs and procedures, become SME of safety programs, and ensure they are maintained
  • natural disaster emergency response, provide safety oversight for hurricane recovery efforts for any damage to the natural gas pipeline
  • lead special projects, investigation of employee injuries and near misses
  • provide respiratory protection employee fit testing, inspection of SCBA, air packs and fire suits
  • SMS Safety management system, facilitate continued improvement with compliance and implementation of the Peoples Gas SMS, work closely with quality assurance team on program reviews and corrective actions
  • fleet safety oversight including driver score cards, aggression reports, smith driver training, investigate all vehicle collisions, prepare and present information to determine avoidability and corrective actions, FDOT compliance for commercial motor vehicles and hazardous material transportation
  • provide technical expertise to front line management to assist them with the implementation of safety programs at the operating level
  • lead safety committee for the service areas, present monthly safety meetings to service areas, conduct a minimum of 100 field safety observations
  • perform routine field visits to check conditions and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and policies, identify and evaluate hazards and research and recommend control strategies for the hazards
  • conduct initial, refresher, gas technician apprentice program safety related training such as respiratory protection, pre-job safety briefing, trenching and excavation, smith driver, fire extinguisher, emergency response to natural gas, identification of high energy states
  • lead for service area environmental coordinators, classify, label, ship hazardous waste, universal waste, participate in service area environmental audits
