The Safety and Training Manager role at MV Transportation is a critical leadership position that involves hands-on management to ensure all safety and training programs meet or exceed regulatory standards set by both state and federal agencies, including OSHA, EPA, FMCSA, FTA, and DOT. This full-time role is essential in fostering a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement throughout the operational divisions of the company. The manager will be responsible for implementing comprehensive safety and training programs, including new hire and refresher training, defensive driving courses, safety meetings, and emergency preparedness drills.

This position requires active leadership in ensuring all drivers and operators are up to date with current training requirements and that all safety manuals, policies, and procedures remain current and effectively aligned with both corporate and client contractual obligations. The Safety and Training Manager acts as the key expert and point of contact for CDL compliance and safety regulations, providing guidance and oversight at the division level. The role also involves analyzing safety data and trends to proactively develop strategies that reduce incidents and enhance overall safety outcomes.

Additional responsibilities include collaborating with corporate claims teams to manage liability and worker's compensation claims efficiently, minimizing lost work time, and facilitating the return of injured employees to light or full duty as promptly as possible. The manager will oversee safety incentive programs, conduct audits, and lead the coordination of classroom and hands-on driver instruction in line with strict specifications set by clients and corporate standards.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum three years leadership experience in transit safety
  • TSI certification required
  • Valid Class A or B California license with passenger endorsement
  • Verified Transit Training (VTT) certification
  • Experience preferably in urban public transit
  • Five plus years safety management experience desired
  • CDS or CSP designation preferred
  • Knowledge of FTA, FMCSA, DOT safety regulations
  • Proficient in English communication
  • Strong organizational and delegation skills
  • Ability to work independently and objectively
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Windows
  • Strong analytical and computer skills

Job Qualifications

  • Three years in leadership role providing transit safety experience
  • TSI certification
  • three years of instructional experience
  • valid Class A or B California license with passenger endorsement
  • Verified Transit Training (VTT)
  • Experience working in transit preferably urban public
  • Previous passenger transportation experience in current or similar environment preferred
  • Five plus years of safety management experience desired
  • Prefer CDS (Certified Director of Safety) and/or CSP (Certified Safety Professional) designation
  • Knowledge of all applicable safety rules and regulations including FTA, FMCSA, and DOT
  • Knowledge of regulations and corporate safety programs and policies
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with all departments
  • Ability to work independently and objectively
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to delegate tasks and supervise department staff
  • Familiarity with Windows-based computer systems and Microsoft Office
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong Microsoft applications experience

Job Duties

  • Implement and maintain all operator training and safety programs including new-hire and refresher training, defensive driving, safety meetings, and emergency preparedness
  • Ensure all operators are current with training requirements of company and contract
  • Keep safety manuals, programs, policies and practices current to meet division needs
  • Serve as expert in EPA, OSHA, CDL compliance and regulations
  • Ensure new hires meet minimum qualifications including background and DMV checks
  • Utilize safety technology tools, analyze trend data and develop plans to reduce safety incidents
  • Oversee corporate safety incentives and programs including assignment of safety points
  • Foster a consistent safety culture across operations, safety, and maintenance departments emphasizing teamwork and individual responsibility
  • Collaborate with corporate claims staff to manage liability and worker's compensation claims efficiently
  • Manage employee injury claims to minimize lost time and promote prompt return to duty
  • Oversee completion of related audits by corporate, client, state, and federal agencies
  • Lead safety organization for classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction per corporate and client specifications
