Job Description
Western Oregon University (WOU) is a distinguished regional public university located in Monmouth, Oregon, nestled in the picturesque Willamette Valley. Established as one of Oregon's oldest public institutions in 1882, WOU has a longstanding history dedicated to teacher training and expanding its academic offerings over the decades. Today, it stands as a mid-sized university that offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs spanning arts and sciences, education, and professional studies. Known for its commitment to small class sizes, sustainability, and providing a diverse liberal arts education, WOU operates as a Hispanic Serving Institution with over 40 percent of its undergraduate student body being students of color. This diversity fosters an inclusive, student-centered environment that champions cultural awareness and academic excellence. The university enjoys a strategic location approximately 20 minutes from Salem, Oregon's capital, and roughly 75 minutes from Portland, the state’s cultural hub, providing students and staff alike with access to a broad range of professional, cultural, and recreational opportunities.
The Translator/Reviewer position at Western Oregon University plays a critical role in bridging communication between the university and its diverse community, specifically focusing on language translation and cultural adaptation. This full-time remote role entails translating and reviewing materials in Spanish, Russian, or Mandarin to ensure clarity, accuracy, and cultural relevance, particularly for early childhood education audiences. The translator/reviewer ensures that resources, communications, and program materials are not only linguistically accurate but also culturally and developmentally appropriate, thereby enhancing the accessibility of university programs and outreach efforts. Collaborating closely with the TRI staff, early childhood professionals, funders, and various university departments, this role supports the university’s broader mission to make education equitable and inclusive. A successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in English and the target language, have experience in early childhood education or related fields, and exhibit an understanding of cultural humility and adaptability. This position is ideal for professionals passionate about language, education, and cultural outreach, offering a competitive pay rate of $31.50 per hour and comprehensive benefits including health insurance, retirement plans, tuition reimbursement, and more, reflecting the university's commitment to its employees' well-being and professional growth.
