The Food Services Kitchen at UMass Memorial Health is currently seeking motivated individuals to join their team as Patient Food Service Assistants. This non-exempt position offers a competitive hourly wage range of $17.90 to $33.22, with the final salary offer reflecting the candidate's experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations. The role is full-time, requiring 40 hours per week with a mixed shift schedule from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Sunday through Saturday. A signing bonus may be available, with eligibility to be confirmed during the interview process.

The Patient Food Service Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring accurate and timely meal service to patients, contributing directly to the comfort and recovery experience of those receiving care. This position involves delivering patient meal trays, conducting menu rounds, and serving as an essential liaison among patients, nursing units, dietitians, food service staff, and management. Responsibilities include assisting patients with their meals, managing nutritional menu selections, and addressing patient dietary needs and preferences. The assistant also transports food carts and equipment safely across units, maintains cleanliness and restocks supplies, and utilizes computerized menu planning systems to verify diet orders. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively under time constraints and interruptions are crucial to success in this role. The Patient Food Service Assistant supports the overarching goals of the Food and Nutrition Services Department by fostering teamwork, efficiency, and patient-centered care in every task.

Job Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to read write and speak English
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks under time constraints and interruptions
  • Basic knowledge of unit weights measures and mathematical functions
  • Prior experience in a patient care capacity strongly preferred

Job Duties

  • Delivers patient trays as assigned including meals snacks and NOW trays
  • Assists patients with proper positioning of food tray reviews menu selections and opens items as necessary
  • Loads and pushes hot and cold food trucks transports related equipment and operates cart lifts dumbwaiters and elevators
  • Completes menu rounds process communicates with patients and records menu choices adjusts menus for modified diets and informs patients about dietary options
  • Retrieves patient trays delivers them to the main kitchen cleans and restocks carts
  • Utilizes computerized menu planning system to generate and verify current diet order lists with nursing staff
  • Serves as liaison between patients nursing units dietitians food service staff and management in communicating patient requests issues and concerns
