Job Description
UMass Memorial Health is the premier health system in Central Massachusetts, widely recognized for its exceptional patient care, commitment to academic excellence, and leading-edge research initiatives. As the largest healthcare provider in the region, UMass Memorial Health consists of over 20,000 dedicated employees working collaboratively across multiple disciplines to deliver compassionate care and improve community health outcomes. The organization is deeply committed to fostering a supportive, diverse, and inclusive work environment where every staff member, regardless of their role, is valued as an essential part of the healing process. The mission emphasizes respect, collaboration, and innovation, making UMass Memorial Health a sought-after employer for healthcare professionals and support staff alike.
This opportunity is for a non-exempt position within the Food Services Kitchen department, scheduled for 16 hours per week on a mixed shift basis, specifically Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The position falls under the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, and the compensation range offered is between $17.90 to $33.22 per hour, with the final salary determined based on the candidate’s experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations. There may also be a signing bonus available upon eligibility confirmation during the interview process.
The role primarily involves ensuring that patient meal services are delivered accurately and promptly. Responsibilities include selecting menus, assembling trays, and providing food delivery directly to patients. A key part of this role is acting as a liaison between patients, nursing staff, dietitians, food service employees, and management to effectively communicate special dietary requests, patient concerns, and other relevant information. The individual is expected to work cooperatively as part of the Food and Nutrition Services team to support departmental goals and maintain high standards of service quality.
Major duties include delivering patient trays for scheduled meals and snacks, assisting patients with proper tray positioning, reviewing menu selections, and opening packaged items when necessary. The role requires the operation and transportation of hot and cold food carts, as well as other equipment, throughout patient units using lifts, dumbwaiters, and elevators. Additionally, this position involves completing menu rounds with patients to record their meal choices and adjusting menus based on diet prescriptions while providing food alternatives when dietary restrictions apply. The caregiver also retrieves all patient trays after meals, returning them to the main kitchen, and ensures carts are cleaned and restocked efficiently. Utilization of a computerized menu planning system to generate accurate diet order lists in collaboration with nursing staff is essential to this role.
UMass Memorial Health values excellent communication skills, the ability to multitask in high-pressure environments, and a fundamental understanding of weights, measures, and basic math functions. Candidates with prior patient care experience are strongly preferred. The organization embraces equity, diversity, and inclusivity, assuring equal employment opportunities without discrimination based on race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected factors. UMass Memorial Health is committed to providing assistance for applicants requiring accommodations during the hiring process, reinforcing its dedication to respect and accessibility for all.
