Job Description

The Michaels Companies Inc. is a leading retail company in North America specializing in arts and crafts supplies, creative solutions, and various celebration products. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels has established itself as the premier destination for creative enthusiasts, offering a vast selection of products through over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada, as well as online at Michaels.com and Michaels.ca. In addition to its retail operations, Michaels owns Artistree, a manufacturer of custom and specialty framing merchandise, which adds another dimension to its product offerings. This long-standing company has built a reputation for fostering creativity, providing quality products, and supporting its customers in their artistic endeavors.

The role of Store Manager at Michaels Whitemarsh, MD, is a full-time position with a total base pay range of $60,700 to $81,000 per year. The Store Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for managing all aspects of store operations and ensuring that the team effectively delivers exceptional customer experiences while meeting business goals and key performance indicators (KPIs). This involves overseeing daily operational activities, managing store staffing and performance, and driving sales and profit plans to align with the company's annual performance objectives.

Store Managers at Michaels are expected to dedicate the majority of their time to managerial duties rather than participating in non-managerial tasks such as cashiering or stocking shelves. They lead the execution of customer brand promises, enforce company policies and standards, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Additionally, they implement shrink and safety programs to protect assets and maintain a safe working and shopping environment. Store Managers also use company tools to set priorities, communicate goals, and monitor overall store performance.

A key responsibility involves hiring, training, and coaching team members to achieve their individual and collective KPIs. Store Managers lead the performance management and disciplinary processes when necessary, identify and develop talent, and promote a positive working environment by exemplifying the organization’s values and vision. They serve as a role model for team members, maintaining respectful and professional interactions in all situations, including difficult ones.

Store Managers are also expected to have an operational understanding of all store departments, ensuring cross-training among management teams, particularly in custom framing selling and production. They serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) when scheduled, taking full accountability for store operations during those periods.

The position demands physical stamina and mobility, including the ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the store, and perform activities such as bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching. Some duties require the ability to lift heavy items and access high shelves, often utilizing ladders or similar equipment. The work environment consists of a public retail store setting with climate-controlled public areas, some non-climate controlled stock rooms, occasional outdoor work, and exposure to equipment used in the frame shop like glass cutters and heat presses. Work hours include nights, weekends, and early mornings.

Michaels takes pride in supporting the well-being of its team by offering comprehensive benefits for both full-time and part-time employees. These benefits include health insurance covering medical, dental, and vision plans, paid time off, tuition assistance, and generous employee discounts. Michaels is committed to equal opportunity employment, actively ensuring inclusion and accommodation for qualified individuals and providing reasonable accommodations to those who require them during the job application process or work performance.

This Store Manager role is ideal for candidates with retail management leadership experience who are passionate about leading teams, delivering excellent customer service, and driving store success within a vibrant and creative retail environment. The position offers the chance to be part of a respected and well-established company dedicated to fostering creativity and community.
