The Retail Operations Manager position sits within this dynamic environment, overseeing the merchandise and food service operations for specific departments at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. This salaried, full-time role is pivotal in ensuring the seamless functioning of retail and quick-service food areas, with responsibilities spanning budgeting, revenue management, inventory oversight, merchandising, food safety, menu development, and client services. Reporting to either the Associate Director of Retail Operations or the Restaurant General Manager, the manager serves as a leader and motivator for staff, engaging in the recruitment, training, and performance management processes. They play a critical role in sustaining high levels of guest satisfaction and operational excellence while promoting a culture of safety and compliance across their departments.
This position is responsible for managing financial accountability through strategic budget implementation, focusing on revenue maximization, cost control, and labor efficiency. The manager also oversees inventory management using point of sale systems and inventory software to ensure data accuracy and operational cost management across multiple venues. Additionally, this role involves developing safety programs aimed at preventing injuries and maintaining compliance with health, safety, and sanitation standards, including alcohol service regulations. Menu development and ongoing facility maintenance and improvement projects are also essential duties. Job Requirements
- Must have at least two years prior management experience in a retail or food setting
- Experience working with represented labor preferred
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, hospitality, or related field preferred
- Servesafe Manager Certification within 90 days is required
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team
- Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Able to handle complex interactions with employees and guests with tact and diplomacy
- Able to operate Point of Sale systems
- Knowledge of inventory best practices
- Able to operate moderately complex computer software programs
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Understanding of budgets, profit and loss statements
Job Qualifications

Job Duties
- Leads and inspires quick service food/retail staff including hiring, training, mentoring, and performance management
- Oversees quick service food/retail operations such as scheduling, guest experience, menu development, safety, cleanliness, and facility maintenance
- Exercises fiscal accountability including budgeting, maximizing revenue, managing cost of goods and labor, and shared revenue contracts
- Manages inventory and oversees point of sale and inventory software for accuracy and operational cost control
- Develops and enforces safety and food safety programs ensuring compliance with health, sanitation, and alcohol awareness standards
- Acts as Duty Manager as scheduled and assists with project management of facility improvements
- Creates a motivating environment to drive employee engagement and high-quality guest service
