Job Description
PetSmart is a leading specialty pet retailer committed to delivering quality products, services, and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets. Founded in 1986, PetSmart has grown into the largest pet specialty retailer of services and solutions for pets in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. With over 1,650 stores and a team of approximately 50,000 associates, the company firmly believes that Anything for Pets begins with our people. They create meaningful experiences for pets and their families by providing an empowering work environment with the tools, resources, and development opportunities necessary for growth and success. PetSmart embraces a core philosophy of service, dedication, and a passion for pets that fosters lasting relationships both inside the workplace and with their customers. Joining PetSmart means becoming part of a family that celebrates diversity and values the unique perspectives of every associate united by a shared love for pets.
The role of Retail Operations Manager at PetSmart is a critical leadership position responsible for driving operational excellence across stores while upholding the company’s vision, mission, values, and strategy. This role involves shared responsibility for merchandising and inventory management, pet care operations, store opening and closing procedures, leading associates, managing financial outcomes, and ensuring a safe and organized environment. The ideal candidate will have 3 or more years of retail leadership experience or background in a customer-focused environment and must be available full-time with flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
As a Process Leader, the Retail Operations Manager takes a hands-on approach to coaching and developing the team, recruiting and interviewing new associates, fostering associate engagement, and ensuring associates are well trained across various store functions such as pet care maintenance, hotel and salon cleaning, and operational processes that prioritize pet safety and healthy environments. The manager also coordinates staffing, validates completion of operational messages, and communicates company information clearly to the team to meet business and pet parent needs effectively.
Further responsibilities include managing the overall store experience by overseeing healthcare for store-owned pets, ensuring proper execution of inventory and pricing processes, maintaining vendor relationships, and supporting Buy Online and Pick Up In Store and Ship From Store programs. The manager analyzes sales trends and inventory metrics to make sound merchandising decisions that optimize store space and product selections, maintain cleanliness and compliance, and uphold a culture centered on empowerment and policy adherence. Safety is prioritized for associates, pets, and customers, with immediate action taken when sick or injured pets are identified.
Expense management is another essential aspect of this role where the Retail Operations Manager drives growth opportunities, holds associates accountable for sales and shrink targets, analyzes inventory reports to identify trends and causes, and manages labor and supplies expenses. The position involves collaboration with Home Office partners for work orders and purchase card allocation.
PetSmart offers competitive pay based on experience and location, plus a quarterly incentive based on store performance and eligible earnings. Full-time associates enjoy a comprehensive benefits package including health and wellness benefits, paid weekly wages, 401k plans with company matches, paid time off, associate discounts, tuition assistance, career pathing, and development opportunities. PetSmart is committed to equal employment opportunity and provides accommodations for applicants with disabilities during the hiring process. This role is a remarkable opportunity for individuals passionate about pets and retail management to make a meaningful impact by creating moments that matter for pets, their parents, and co-workers every day.
