The Retail Operations Lead, also known as the Process Lead, is a vital position within PetSmart's store leadership team responsible for driving operational excellence and ensuring a positive experience for customers, associates, and pets alike. This role requires a strong focus on merchandising, inventory management, pet care operations, and maintaining store cleanliness and safety. The Retail Operations Lead plays a pivotal role in executing merchandising strategies that optimize sales, which includes receiving products, organizing seasonal displays, and managing inventory levels through regular audits and sales trend analysis. Additionally, the role involves operating point-of-sale systems, handling cash transactions with accuracy, and ensuring compliance with company policies and ethics.

Leadership and team development are key components of this position. Although the Retail Operations Lead does not have direct reports, they provide guidance, training, mentoring, and coaching to sales associates to improve performance and promote growth opportunities. This person acts as a leader on duty, delegating daily tasks, addressing associate complaints, and fostering a culture of recognition and engagement. Another core responsibility is pet care, which involves ensuring that pets in the store are healthy, well-fed, and cared for, including managing new arrivals and sick animals with prompt action and reporting.

Job Requirements

  • Must be over the age of 18
  • Full-time availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and perform physical tasks frequently
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally team lift more than 100 pounds
  • Ability to handle live animals safely
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Basic proficiency in computer applications
  • Capability to maintain composure under pressure
  • Commitment to maintaining store cleanliness and safety standards

Job Qualifications

  • 2+ years of retail supervisory experience in a customer-focused environment
  • Full-time availability, flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to react under pressure and maintain composure
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially in store layout
  • Experience mentoring or coaching associates preferred

Job Duties

  • Support and guide sales associates in merchandise handling, providing training on product knowledge and presentation standards
  • Facilitate associate experience and support associate development including training, onboarding, mentoring, coaching, providing feedback, disciplinary actions, and promotions
  • Delegate and validate completion of daily tasks
  • Lead and direct associates when acting as leader on duty
  • Address and administer associate complaints and grievances
  • Recognize and celebrate associates driving associate engagement
  • Execute merchandise strategies to optimize sales including receiving product, product placement, seasonal displays, promotional setups
  • Manage inventory levels, conduct regular audits, analyze sales trends for stock replenishment and markdowns
  • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records and address discrepancies
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems and handle cash transactions ensuring accuracy and policy compliance
  • Maintain store standards and ensure compliance with Policies and Procedures and Code of Ethics
  • Share responsibility for store opening and closing procedures
  • Complete monthly live cycle counts and address discrepancies
  • Manage pet care maintenance and commitment standards including cleaning, feeding, providing water, and caring for new arrival and sick pets
  • Ensure positive experience for pet parents with online orders including pick-up and ship from store
  • Support associate and pet parent experience and ensure pets are safe and healthy
  • Take immediate action and report sick or injured pets and provide transport to vet as needed
  • Follow Policies and Procedures to prepare for and receive new store owned pet arrivals and ensure they are healthy after quarantine period
