The Retail Operations Lead, also known as the Process Lead, plays a critical role in PetSmart's operational success. This position focuses on driving excellence within store operations by overseeing merchandising and inventory management, ensuring pet care standards are met, and maintaining an organized and safe shopping environment. The Retail Operations Lead supports the execution of merchandise strategies, including product placement, promotional displays, and inventory audits, to optimize sales and maintain accurate inventory records. Additionally, the role involves handling store opening and closing responsibilities and operating point-of-sale systems to ensure efficient transactions.

This role requires a strong emphasis on leadership and associate development. Although the Retail Operations Lead does not have direct reports, they are responsible for guiding and mentoring sales associates, facilitating onboarding and training, providing performance feedback, and fostering a positive associate experience. The position calls for someone who can lead by example when acting as the leader on duty, delegate daily tasks effectively, address associate issues professionally, and celebrate team achievements to enhance engagement.

Beyond operational duties, the Retail Operations Lead is entrusted with the care and well-being of pets in the store. This includes routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning, feeding, and providing water, managing the care of new arrivals and sick pets, and ensuring a safe and healthy environment. Job Requirements

  • Be over the age of 18 except where local or state law specifies
  • Full-time availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Minimum 2 years of retail supervisory experience
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, lift up to 50 pounds frequently and over 100 pounds occasionally with team lift
  • Commitment to pet care and safety protocols

Job Qualifications

  • 2+ years of retail supervisory experience in a customer-focused environment
  • Full-time availability with flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to react under pressure and maintain composure
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail especially maintaining visually appealing store layout

Job Duties

  • Support and guide sales associates in merchandise handling, providing training on product knowledge and presentation standards
  • Facilitates the associate experience and supports associate development including training, onboarding, mentoring, coaching, performance reviews, disciplinary action, and promotions
  • Delegate and validate completion of daily tasks
  • Leads and directs associates when acting as the leader on duty
  • Address and administer associate complaints and grievances
  • Recognizes and celebrates associates driving overall associate engagement
  • Execute merchandise strategies to optimize sales including receiving, product placement, seasonal displays, and promotional setups
  • Manages inventory levels, conducts regular audits, analyzes sales trends to recommend stock replenishment and markdowns
  • Assists in maintaining accurate inventory records and addressing discrepancies
  • Operate point-of-sale systems and handle cash transactions ensuring accuracy and policy compliance
  • Maintains store standards, ensures compliance with policies and code of ethics
  • Shared responsibility in store opening and closing procedures
  • Completes monthly live cycle counts and addresses discrepancies
  • Responsible for pet care maintenance including cleaning, feeding, watering, and care of new or sick pets
  • Ensures positive pet parent experiences with online orders including pick-up and shipping
  • Supports associate and pet parent experience ensuring pets are safe and healthy
  • Takes immediate action and reports sick or injured pets and arranges veterinary care as needed
  • Follows company policies to prepare for and manage new pet arrivals including quarantine and health checks
