As a multifaceted distributor, wholesaler, and retailer operating within a global supply chain network, SpartanNash distributes a wide variety of grocery and household goods across all 50 states. Among its notable offerings is the Our Family® portfolio of products, which emphasizes quality and community connection. SpartanNash's expansive reach includes national accounts, independent and chain grocers, e-commerce retailers, U.S. military commissaries and exchanges, as well as the company’s own stores that encompass grocery outlets, pharmacies, and fuel centers.
The company culture is characterized by its 'braggingly happy' team members, spanning diverse roles from bakery managers to IT developers, vice presidents to HR business partners, and export specialists to order selectors. This vibrant and inclusive workforce is united by a commitment to creating outstanding customer experiences and driving success across all facets of the business.
This specific job opening is for a Marketing Intern based at the Madison, Wisconsin location. The Marketing Intern role is central to bridging the SpartanNash brand with local shoppers by supporting and executing marketing initiatives aimed at increasing engagement, driving store traffic, and bolstering community presence. This hands-on opportunity places the intern at the heart of retail marketing efforts, collaborating closely with store teams and cross-functional partners to bring innovative marketing strategies to life in the local market. This position offers invaluable experience in areas such as event execution, digital content creation, and talent attraction, all while contributing directly to measurable business outcomes.
The responsibilities include local marketing execution where the intern drives activations designed to boost shopper engagement within the Madison market, ensuring marketing materials like signage, displays, and promotional setups adhere to brand standards. The role also encompasses event planning and community engagement by assisting in both the preparation and execution of in-store and community events, fostering strong relationships with local organizations and acting as a professional brand representative.
In addition, digital, social, and recruitment marketing tasks are integral to this internship. The intern will assist in creating and publishing digital content aligned with brand guidelines, monitor social media trends to enhance engagement, and capture compelling event content through photos and videos. They will also support recruitment marketing efforts by promoting open positions, assisting with hiring signage, and facilitating hiring events. The role requires cross-functional collaboration with teams in store operations, merchandising, marketing, and HR, ensuring project goals are met through effective communication and coordination.
Finally, the intern is expected to observe shopper behaviors and local market trends, identifying innovative opportunities to connect with customers and candidates in creative ways. They will contribute feedback and new ideas to continually improve marketing effectiveness and strengthen community ties.
This internship requires the candidate to be currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, food marketing, or related fields, and be located in Madison, Wisconsin. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, strong communication skills, problem-solving capabilities, and a collaborative mindset are essential. Preferred qualifications include an interest or experience in retail marketing, brand marketing, or event management, as well as familiarity with social media content creation. As part of its People First culture, SpartanNash offers a competitive Total Rewards benefits package and fosters a welcoming work environment dedicated to associate development and equal opportunity.
