Job Description

Dollar General Corporation is a retail powerhouse with more than 80 years of experience serving communities across the United States. Known for delivering value to shoppers by offering a wide selection of frequently used products such as food, snacks, health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, basic apparel, housewares, and seasonal items, Dollar General operates convenient neighborhood stores designed to help customers save both time and money every day. With a commitment encapsulated by its mission of "Serving Others," the company prides itself on valuing the unique strengths and perspectives that each employee brings to the team. Dollar General is much more than a retail company — it is a community-focused organization dedicated to fostering growth opportunities and career advancement across various functions, including Store operations, Distribution Centers, Store Support Centers, and its Private Fleet Team.

The role of Area Manager at Dollar General is an integral leadership position responsible for planning and executing the activities of all stores within a designated geographic area. This position comes with full profit and loss responsibility and demands a strategic approach to ensure the achievement of divisional and regional goals. The Area Manager leads multiple store teams by fostering a culture that upholds Dollar General’s mission and values, ensuring fair administration of human resources policies and practices, and delivering superior customer service through engaging and friendly store environments.

A critical aspect of this role involves driving annual sales growth by monitoring quality orders and efficient inventory flow processes, while ensuring all resources and tools are utilized effectively to maintain superior inventory presentation and management standards across all stores. The Area Manager must engage in rigorous planning and execution of company objectives while maximizing productivity through sensible scheduling strategies. Additionally, this leader is charged with the total development of human capital by proactively recruiting, selecting, and educating employees, thereby supporting continuous employee and customer development.

Protecting company assets through effective loss prevention and expense management is another key responsibility. The Area Manager must also identify and pursue new business opportunities within the operational area, which may include improvements in distribution flow, merchandising display efforts, store growth, real estate site selection, recruiting strategy, training and development priorities, employee relations, customer service initiatives, and systems implementation. A successful Area Manager communicates divisional and regional priorities clearly and consistently to all store teams, ensuring alignment and commitment towards corporate goals.

This position involves weekly travel within the assigned area using a company-provided vehicle, including limited overnight stays. Candidates must possess a current driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving history. The role requires an experienced leader with a strong background in multi-unit retail management and a proven ability to achieve performance objectives through effective leadership, financial acumen, interpersonal skills, and adaptability in a dynamic retail environment. Joining Dollar General as an Area Manager offers a challenging yet rewarding career path with an influential role in driving operational excellence and customer satisfaction within one of the most respected retail brands in the country.
