Job Description

The hiring establishment is a respected hospital known for its commitment to delivering exceptional healthcare services while fostering a supportive and professional work environment. This healthcare institution is dedicated to upholding its philosophy, mission statement, and core values in every aspect of its operations, including employee-customer interactions, thereby ensuring that every patient and visitor experiences compassionate and high-quality care. The hospital is committed to maintaining a professional image and offers its employees a respectful workplace where communication and teamwork are highly valued.

This particular role focuses on food service within the hospital's facility, engaging a skilled cook or food preparation specialist who will be responsible for maintaining quality food standards, safety, and guest relations in line with the hospital's expectations. The position involves preparing a variety of food items, strictly following standardized recipes and food safety protocols, ensuring all meals meet the highest standards in texture, temperature, aroma, and taste. The role requires preparing food to order where applicable, adapting to specific customer requests such as grilled sandwiches, pasta entrees, salads, and fried items to enhance the guest experience.

This is a critical role in the hospital’s food service department that demands adherence to safe food handling practices as prescribed by regulatory authorities such as the State of Illinois Department of Public Health. The employee will be expected to rotate food properly using the first-in, first-out method, and handle safe storage practices including labeling, dating, and temperature monitoring to prevent cross-contamination. The role requires meticulous stock management including the monitoring of cold and warm food items in compliance with IDPH standards, ensuring that items are held and served within the appropriate time frames.

Time management and adherence to departmental schedules are essential components of this role. The incumbent must follow strict timelines for food preparation and service, maintain punctual attendance and clock-in policies, and demonstrate efficiency during work hours. The role also involves responsible cost control through the accurate recording of food production, correct portioning, and effective utilization of all food products including the integration of carryovers when appropriate.

Furthermore, training and continuous professional development are key elements. The role includes participation in department in-services, production meetings, and provides ongoing feedback to improve quality. The incumbent is expected to assist with cross-training colleagues, contribute to recipe and process improvements, and ensure continuous quality improvement within the food service operation.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, alongside 1-2 years of retail cooking experience. A strong command of the English language is necessary for effective communication and understanding of job duties. Importantly, candidates must possess a valid State of Illinois Department of Public Health Food Sanitation Certificate which confirms their knowledge and compliance with safe food handling standards.

Physical requirements for this position include the ability to work in environments with temperature extremes—hot cooking areas as well as cold storage facilities like coolers and freezers. Employees must be capable of lifting up to 35 pounds independently, with assistance or equipment for heavier loads, and possess good mobility to handle frequent bending, movement, and the challenges posed by wet or slippery floors. The position may involve varying shifts and work positions throughout a typical workweek.

This food service role within the hospital is not only about cooking and serving food; it embodies a commitment to excellence, safety, and patient satisfaction in a healthcare setting, offering a stable and rewarding employment opportunity for individuals passionate about culinary arts and guest service in a dynamic and caring environment.
