Job Description
The New York Public Library is the nation's most extensive public library system, renowned for its commitment to providing free education and information to the residents of New York and beyond. With an impressive network of 92 locations, including both research and branch libraries across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, the NYPL serves a diverse and wide-ranging community. Each year, millions of patrons visit its facilities, making it one of the most frequented libraries nationwide. The Library offers a variety of resources including free materials, computer access, educational classes, exhibitions, programming, and more, catering to visitors from toddlers to scholars. The NYPL continues to see record attendance and circulation, reflecting its importance as an educational and cultural hub in the city.
Within the iconic building located at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, the Library Shop is a special retail establishment attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. This unique shop specializes in bookish items and books that celebrate literature, knowledge, and the arts. It’s more than a retail space; it embodies the spirit and mission of the New York Public Library itself by fostering a love for learning and reading among all who visit.
We are currently seeking a Seasonal Temporary Part-Time Retail Associate to join The Library Shop team. This role is vital because the associate will be both the face and personality of the shop, providing careful and enthusiastic service to every visitor. The role requires an individual who can operate as a cashier and actively engage with customers, sharing product knowledge and offering assistance with a friendly and helpful demeanor. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment where customer interaction and efficiency are key.
In addition to handling transactions accurately and swiftly with the point-of-sale system, the successful candidate will have a curious mind with a great visual memory to quickly learn and share information about the shop's wide range of products. Responsibilities include assisting customers in making gift selections, maintaining inventory and product displays, giving directions, and managing other store-related tasks with a positive and proactive attitude. Flexibility in scheduling is preferred, with mandatory availability on Saturdays. Multilingual skills are a bonus but not required.
This seasonal, part-time position offers between 15 to 25 hours per week and is perfect for individuals seeking temporary employment in a culturally rich and welcoming environment. Above all, the ideal candidate should appreciate the unique environment of The Library Shop and enjoy playing an active role in creating an exceptional retail experience that complements the mission of the New York Public Library.
