Truth be Told is a distinctive British Gastropub situated inside The Study at the University of Chicago, located in the scenic Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. This unique establishment offers an inviting atmosphere paired with a sophisticated menu, embodying the spirit of British pub culture while embracing the dynamic and culturally rich environment of the University of Chicago campus. Known for its blend of classic culinary favorites and inventive twists, Truth be Told provides guests with a warm, communal dining experience complemented by high-quality service and a welcoming ambiance. The gastropub operates seven days a week, with hours running from 7 AM to 10 PM, making it a vibrant destination for both students, university employees, and local residents seeking an authentic yet modern dining venue.

The Study Hotels group, which owns the gastropub, is recognized for its stylish and thoughtfully designed hotels, and the location at the University of Chicago reinforces their commitment to creating spaces that foster connection, discovery, and memorable experiences through exceptional hospitality. The Study at University of Chicago features 167 guest rooms and suites, a full-service restaurant and gastropub, extensive meeting and banquet facilities, and cultural programming, all underscored by an inviting, residential-style aesthetic.

The role being offered is for a full-time Restaurant Support/Runner position, ideal for individuals who thrive in a team atmosphere, enjoy meeting new people, and have an engaging, vibrant personality. This position is primarily focused on providing superior hospitality and service to guests, acting as a vital support member of the front-of-house team. Duties include running food from the kitchen to tables, assisting with room service tray preparation, bussing and resetting tables, polishing silverware and glassware, ensuring that setups and breakdowns meet cleanliness standards, and monitoring the overall dining experience to promptly resolve guest concerns. Additionally, the role entails assisting hosts in seating guests, working cooperatively with servers to ensure timely and accurate order delivery, and maintaining safe and hygienic work environments consistent with food safety regulations.

The position requires weekend availability and a flexible schedule, including the ability to work holidays. This role offers a pay rate of $12.70 per hour plus tips, along with a 50 percent employee dining discount, paid time off, nine paid holidays annually for eligible full-time employees, complimentary shift meals, and access to exclusive retail discounts through LifeMart. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • two plus years of experience in formal dining or upscale casual environment
  • excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skills
  • proficiency in English
  • strong organizational skills including follow up, time management, multitasking and managing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • ability to positively communicate and interact with all hotel departments
  • ability to grasp, lift or carry goods weighing up to 40 lbs
  • ability to stand for long periods indoors
  • satisfactory completion of background check
  • flexible to work evenings, weekends and holidays
  • ability to maintain a friendly, cheerful and courteous demeanor at all times

Job Duties

  • Provide the highest and most efficient level of hospitality and customer service expected by our guests
  • perform other duties if required and as assigned
  • help prepare room service trays with condiments, candles, napkins, service plates and utensils
  • support the restaurant servers by running the food from the kitchen to the table
  • ensure all side work is completed throughout the shift including polishing silver and glassware and completing certain roll-ups
  • expedite and ensure all food is up to par and consistent
  • help monitor and observe guest’s dining experience to ensure guest satisfaction and respond promptly to any issues
  • maintain a level of knowledge of all menu items and beverage programs
  • be a team player and assist others to ensure a seamless guest experience
  • complete the setup and breakdown of a section including detailed cleaning
  • work with servers to ensure orders are completed according to request and on time
  • maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • report any damages, shortcomings, and disturbances to supervisors
  • ensure that restaurant operation procedures and hygiene meet food safety standards and regulations
  • ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays
  • be available to fill in as needed to ensure smooth and efficient restaurant operation as directed by the Restaurant Manager
  • assist the host/hostess in greeting and seating guests
  • bussing, cleaning and setting tables at the end of a meal
  • help prepare the dining area by clothing tables and setting decorations and utensils
