The position of Restaurant Steward plays a critical role in supporting the Food and Beverage department aboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships. This role operates under the supervision of the Assistant Maître D’, the position grade is C2, and focuses on ensuring the cleanliness and operational efficiency of the main dining rooms, buffet, and crew mess areas. The Restaurant Steward is responsible for various duties including table turnover, beverage service promotion, maintaining cleanliness, and assisting wait staff with stocking and cleaning tasks. This role is pivotal in achieving guest satisfaction targets and increasing food and beverage revenues by providing fast, efficient, and friendly support to both guests and the dining team.
The Restaurant Steward’s responsibilities include engaging in essential functions such as safeguarding operational equipment, adhering to safety and environmental policies, and performing side work such as silverware roll-ups, trash disposal, and beverage station maintenance. The individual will serve tables, assist waiters, set up crew mess rooms, maintain food lines, and ensure cleanliness at all service points. This position demands flexibility to adapt to supervisor directions and changing schedules, accommodating the multi-cultural environment aboard the ship.
Working conditions require considerable physical activity including standing for extended periods, walking long distances, repetitive motions like bending and climbing stairs, and the ability to lift heavy loads (over 25 pounds). The role requires acute sensory capabilities such as close and distance vision, peripheral awareness, and hearing to carry out safety and service duties effectively. Team members must be physically fit to participate in emergency procedures and safety drills, and able to adjust to the maritime environment’s unique challenges.
Education and qualifications for this role include a high school diploma or equivalent, prior experience in restaurant or shipboard operations, sales and service of wine and beverages, and proficiency in English. Training in safety, public health, environmental regulations, and sanitation is required. Personal attributes essential for success include being service-oriented, maintaining professional appearance and hygiene, demonstrating respect for coworkers and guests, exhibiting positive attitudes such as politeness and courtesy, and being able to work seven days a week. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or foreign equivalency
- Minimum of one year restaurant experience in a land-based or shipboard operation
- Experience selling and serving wine and other beverage products
- Intermediate to advanced English verbal and writing skills
- Completion of courses or training in safety, environmental, public health and sanitation regulations
- Able to work seven days a week
- Must maintain professional appearance and good hygiene
- Able to live and work in close quarters with others
- Physically capable of standing, walking long distances, climbing stairs and lifting over 25 pounds
