Job Description

Whataburger is a renowned American fast-food restaurant chain that has been serving up fresh, made-to-order burgers since 1950. Known for its bold flavors and commitment to quality, Whataburger has grown into a beloved brand with a strong presence across the southern United States and beyond. The company prides itself on fostering a positive work culture where employees are valued as family members, and leadership growth is actively encouraged. Whataburger emphasizes teamwork, integrity, and a passion for excellent service, making it more than just a place to work — it’s a community where individuals can develop their skills and build lasting careers.

The role of a Shift Leader at Whataburger is critical to the smooth and successful operation of the restaurant. As a Shift Leader, you will be the driving force behind the daily shift operations, ensuring that every aspect of the restaurant meets the company’s high standards for food quality, customer service, cleanliness, and safety. This leadership position is not only about maintaining operational excellence but also about nurturing the growth and development of team members, known as Family Members. You will coach, train, and motivate your team to achieve performance goals and deliver an outstanding customer experience.

Working closely with the Restaurant Manager team, the Shift Leader role offers a unique opportunity to build and refine leadership capabilities while strengthening the operational foundation of the restaurant. This position embraces challenges as opportunities to innovate and improve, encouraging proactive problem-solving and a solutions-oriented mindset. The scheduling is flexible, with day, night, evening, and overnight shifts, making it suitable for individuals who thrive in dynamic and fast-paced environments.

Whataburger offers competitive weekly pay and a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid time off, a 401(k) plan with matching contributions, medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as short-term and long-term disability coverage. Employees also benefit from educational support programs, such as free English-language learning and reduced-tuition college courses, helping to further personal and professional growth. Additional perks include meal discounts, wireless service discounts, software discounts, gym memberships, and recognition programs that celebrate employee achievements.

The Shift Leader role is ideal for individuals who are at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience), and have experience in coaching or leading teams. Strong communication, multitasking, and customer service skills are essential. This position requires the ability to meet physical demands such as standing for extended periods and lifting up to 55 pounds. Additionally, certification in ServSafe Food Safety (or the ability to obtain certification during training) is required.

This role is based in a home restaurant, with occasional support provided to neighboring locations or the broader market area. The Shift Leader will also have opportunities to participate in business meetings, leadership training sessions, and other events that promote growth and connectivity within the Whataburger organization. Whataburger is committed to equal employment opportunities, fostering an inclusive workplace free from discrimination, and actively participates in the federal E-Verify program to ensure compliance with employment eligibility requirements.
